1
Shear Force & Bending Moment Diagram (p.140-148)

Shear Force:
• Force which is applied parallel to the face

2
Shear Force & Bending Moment Diagram (p.140-148)

Bending Moment:
• Moment  tendency of a force to twist an object.
• Bending moment exists in a structural element when a moment is applied to
the element make the element bends.
• Moment (M) = F x L
F = applied shear force
L = distance from the reference point to the force

• MA = 10 x 0 = 0
F = 10 kN
• MB = 10 x 2 = 20 kN.m
A B C
2m 3m • Mc = 10 x5 =50 kN.m

3
Shear Force & Bending Moment Diagram (p.140-148)

Shear Force Diagram (SFD):

• Indicates the shear forces withstood/resisted by the beam section along the
length of the beam
Bending Moment Diagram (BMD):
• Indicates the bending moment withstood/resisted by the beam section along
the length of the beam
• The bigger bending moment, the greater will be the area of reinforcement is
required and the bigger dimension is require in the plane of bending
