Management of earthquakes and tsunamis 10/12/2021

Learning objectives
1. To identify and discuss how earthquakes and tsunamis can be managed.
2. To understand why developed (richer) countries can manage earthquakes better than
developing (poorer) countries.

Something to think about!

Can animals predict earthquakes?

How?
Task 1: Starter – A tsunami is coming!

1) Individually, write
down what would
be the best thing
to do in this
situation?
2) As a group, decide
on the best thing
to do?
Activate: We have studied the many effects of the
Sichuan earthquake and the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

• Today, we will be exploring how earthquakes and tsunamis can be

managed. In other words, what can we and the government do before,
during and after an earthquake.
• Task 2: in pairs or groups of 3, brainstorm what you or the government
can do to manage the effects of an earthquake or tsunami.
• In pairs or threes, write down three ideas on your mini-whiteboard
which you will hold up to show the class. You may be asked to give
your best idea.
Managing earthquake disasters
• Schoolchildren practice what to do if an earthquake occurs.
• Let’s do it now! Wait for the signal and then get under your desks!
ACTIVATE: Can you see a defense?

Before and After

Managing Earthquakes and Tsunamis
• The government could make a disaster plan.
• Task 3: In your pairs or threes, write down three things that you think
should be included in a disaster plan. You may use the images below
or your own knowledge. Write your names on the post-it and put it on
the whiteboard.
Examples:
Study the diagram below for 30 seconds.
Is anyone brave enough to come to the front of the class to try
explain this diagram? 2HPs if you can!
Extension question!

• This is a buoy floating in the ocean.

Managing earthquake and tsunami
disasters
• Chinese scientists are using animals to detect earthquakes
• Build ‘earthquake-proof’ houses, buildings and bridges.
Activate: Developed vs Developing Countries

Developed countries are better

equipped to manage earthquakes
and tsunamis than developing
countries.
The question is WHY!

Task 4:
- Organise the statements into things that might happen in a developed (rich) country, or things that might
happen in a developing (poor) country.
- Use a green highlighter for developed countries.
- Use a blue highlighter for developing countries.
If you are finished, you can think of some statements of your own and write them in the two blank boxes
(extension).
For example, developed countries have better communication facilities.
Task 5: Writing

• Write a paragraph explaining why developed countries manage

earthquakes and tsunamis better than developing countries.
• Make sure you follow the instructions on your worksheet as you are
provided with some key words and sentence starters.
Checklist for paragraph
Yes or no?
1. Did I write in full sentences?
2. Did I use two statements from task 4?
3. Did I use two of my own ideas?
4. Did I use key vocabulary from the lesson?

Homework:
Plenary Finish keywords 7-13 for the next lesson

• Complete these 3 questions in your workbook:

1) Should you run to higher or lower ground if there is a tsunami coming?
2) What does drop, cover and hold mean?
3) True or false: Developing countries may have a lack of emergency services and
doctors which can lead to more severe effects after an earthquake.
