Example-#1
1. A combination of vertical curve and horizontal with transition
spirals is to be designed for a new lane 8m wide intersect rural
highway with design speed of 65km/hr. The deflection angle of the
horizontal curve is 1000 at station 36+018m and vertical curve joins
a -2% grades to a 3% grade starting from station 36+050m and
elevation 400m. The cross drainage structure which corresponds
the lowest point on the curve is elevation at station 36+090m.
Widening should be applied on inside edge only. The increase in
width is distributed on the curve length of the spiral and on the
widening which is 0.6m is attained at the starting curvature.

Assume
A. Lateral coefficients of friction= 0.15
B. Longitudinal coefficients of friction = 0.34
C. Perception reaction time, t= 2.7sec
D. Rate of superelevation = 0.8m/m
E. Crown slope of road =3%
F. Rate change of radial acceleration =0.3m/sec3 for 65km/hr.
G. Ration of V: H=1:175
Determine
A.Radius of the circular curve and length of transition curve.
B.Sketch the longitudinal profile of superelevation( pavement revolved
about centerline)
C.What maximum length of the vertical curve that can be used?
D.Does the curve length determined in (C) satisfy the requirement of
minimum stopping sight distance? If not, what should be the
maximum safe speed limit to be posted in order to meet the
requirement?
E. Determine the centerline and edge( both left and right) of pavement
elevation of key station ( such as;- PVT, PVC, lowest point on the
curve, starting of spiral curve, end of spiral curve and tangent length)
F. Sketch your profile of your road centerline.
Example-#2&3
2. A seven-day traffic counting on an existing road resulted in an
AADT of 1,500 in both directions. This road is going to be
upgraded for 10 years’ service life. The road is expected to
generate traffic, which amounts to 20% of the current traffic.
There is no development traffic. The current and the generated
traffic are estimated to grow at 5% per year. If the composition
of traffic consists of 40% cars, 30 % Trucks, and 30% buses, and
the passenger car equivalent factors of these are 1, 3.5,and 2.5,
respectively,
a) Estimate the ADT in passenger car units in the 10th
year in both directions.
Determine
I. If DHV is 15% of ADT, and the traffic in the predominate
direction is 65% of the AADT in both directions, calculate
the DHV.
II. If the ideal capacity of the road at its prevailing traffic
and roadway conditions is estimated to be 800
PCU/lane.
b) Determine the number of lanes required in both directions.
Example-#4& 5
4. A crest (summit) curve is to be provided at the interaction of
two gradients +1.5% and -2%. The required stopping sight
distance is determined to be 180m and the design heights are H1
= 1.1m and H2 = 0.15m while the design speed of the road is
specified as 60km/hr. with a safe radial acceleration as
0.4m/sec2. The chainage and elevation of PVI is 1+000 and
+5000m respectively. Design the vertical curve.
(Hint: The length of the curve is governed by the
sight distance and comfort requirements)
5. What is mass diagram? Using an assumed natural profile and
corresponding grade of a road of your own choice plot and
discuss on the concepts of the mass diagram.
Example-#6
6. It is required to join straights having a total deflection
angle of 18o36’ to a circular curve of 450m radius with spiral
transition curves at each end. The design speed is 70-km/hr
and the rate of change of radial acceleration along the
transition curve is not to exceed 0.3-m/sec 3. Station (or
chainage) to PI is 2 + 524.2.
Determine
a. Length of required transition curve
b.The shift
c. The total tangent length
d.Length of circular curve
e. Total external distance
f. The total offset distance y and deflection angle δ to station
2 + 450
Example-#7
7. Explain the factor affects cutting and filling
volume of earthwork.
8. In horizontal alignment of highways, most of the
time it is not recommended to use reverse
circular curves. Why? In what special case we will
be used?
9. From our daily trip main campus to Sikela town
of Arbaminch we didn’t fill riding comfort due to
failure of pavement visible on the roadway. What
are the failures visible on the Arbaminch road?
