ACTIVITIES OF OHS
• Pre employment examination
• Periodic examination of the vulnerable

Pre employment examination

• This is carried out at the time of joining the job

• The physical and mental capabilities of the individual and job


requirements are usually taken into account.

• The main aim is right man for the right job. Major diseases like
high B.P. high blood sugar, vision disorders are looked for at the
time of examination.
• Communicable disease like T.B will be ruled out.
• Depending upon the type of the job special test such as
audiometry and lung function evaluation will be carried out
• For example Person who are going to work in high noisy areas
audiometry is a must.
• This will serve as a baseline data for future comparisons
Periodic examinations of vulnerable groups
• These are performed at periodic intervals during employment
which involves exposure to potential hazards that could not be
entirely eliminated by preventive and control measures.

• The purpose of periodic health examinations is to monitor the


health of workers during the course of their employment.

• It aims at verifying workers' fitness in relation to their jobs and


at detecting as early as possible any sign of ill-health which
may be due to work.
• Different hazards are present in the work environment. The
effect on health will vary.

• It will depend on the chemical nature of the pollutant.


Periodic examinations of vulnerable groups

• Occupational disease developed will not be curable

• Moreover occupational diseases are notifiable and
compensable under the Act.
• Hence it is necessary to prevent the occupational
diseases.
• During the process of exposure to hazards over a
prolonged period, deviations in health will be
taking place in the human body and these
deviations can be measured by performing certain
test at regular intervals.
Periodic examinations of vulnerable groups
• Examinations of nose is carried out in
electroplaters once in three months to look for
chrome ulcer.
• In workers exposed to lead, blood and urine
samples are analyzed for lead its products every
year as part of periodic medical examination

Pre placement screening


• If an employee wishes change over a different job
in the same organization. This examination carried
out to verify the fitness of the individual to suit the
requirement of new job.
Well person’s screening
• In many enterprises, general health examinations may
be performed by the occupational health service.

• They are usually voluntary and may be available to the


entire workforce or only to certain groups determined
by age, length of employment, status in the
organization and so on.

• They may be comprehensive or limited to screenings for


particular diseases or health risks.
Well person’s screening
• Non occupational diseases like high B.P., diabetes, high
cholesterol and heart diseases have been on the increase in
developed counties and also in developing countries.

• Due to rapid industrialization and due to better standards of


living, life style of employees are changed.

• These diseases are silent diseases.

• If they are not detected and controlled early, they will produce
disabilities.
Pre retirement health screening
• At the time of retirement a comprehensive
medical examination is carried out to reassure
the individual that everything is well

Post employment medical examination


• This is required under the factory rules for those
persons who have performed hazardous jobs.
• To summarize all activities of OHS are health
promotion, diseases preventive, curative and
rehabilitative in nature.
