Roofs are constructed to protect buildings from the elements, with materials like bamboo, wood, or metal sheeting used depending on the location's economic development. Different roof types have distinct shapes like gable, hip, or mansard roofs. Galvanized iron sheeting is a common roofing material that comes in corrugated or plain sheets used for roofing, gutters, flashing, and other accessories, with formulas provided to estimate how many sheets are needed.

Roofs are constructed with the primary function of
providing occupants protection from the elements.
In the rural or remote areas of this country, most roofs are
constructed out of bamboo, rough-hewn wood, cogon or nipa and other materials readily available in the locality.
In the more economically developed regions, concrete,
steel, galvanized iron and aluminum, tiles, shingles, etc. are utilized for roofing buildings. Roof Types 1. Gable 2. Hip 3. Mansard 4. Gambrel 5. Flat 6. Skillion 7. Jerkinhead 8. Butterfly 9. Sheet The most common roofing material known as G.I. Sheet. Plain sheets are used for gutter, flashing, downspout, ridge, valley and hip roll. Corrugated sheets are for roofing. Formula for Estimating Roofing Sheets
The standard width of
corrugated GI sheets is 0.81 meter (32’). Allowing a side lap of 0.10 meter between sheets, the effective width of each is 0.71 meter. Formula for Estimating Roofing Sheets
The standard lengths of ordinary corrugated GI sheets
range from 1.80 meters (6’) to 3.60 meters (12’). When used on steep roofs, the minimum end laps between sheets should be 0.25 meter and 0.30 meter for roofs with moderate slope, respectively. Formula for Estimating Roofing Sheets Formula for Estimating Roofing Sheets EXAMPLE Find the number of corrugated GI roof sheets, rivets, and washers required if the side lapping is 1 ½ corrugations with 30 cm end lapping on a 2” x 3” purlins. EXAMPLE Find the number of corrugated GI roof sheets and umbrella nails required if the side lapping is 1 ½ corrugations with 30 cm end lapping on a 2” x 4” purlins. EXAMPLE Find the number of corrugated GI roof sheets, rivets, and washers required if the side lapping is 2 ½ corrugations with 30 cm end lapping on a 2” x 4” purlins. GUTTER, FLASHING, RIDGE, HIPPED AND VALLEY ROLL
In building construction, these items are categorized
as roof accessories. Estimating these type of accessories is simply determining the number of plain G.I. sheet needed to fabricate the gutter, flashing and rolls according to the form and shape as shown on the plan. GUTTER, FLASHING, RIDGE, HIPPED AND VALLEY ROLL EXAMPLE From the figure, find the number of plain G.I. sheets required to fabricate the open gutter as illustrated.
