Brain

Control and
coordination
Human brain is
protected by Cranial meninges include the following parts
skull Outer layer-Dura mater
and it Is covered Middle layer-Arachnoid
by carnial Inner layer-pia mater
meninges
Human brain is divided
in three major parts
 Forebrain

 Midbrain

 Hindbrain
Forebrain
consists of
Cerebrum
 It’s a major part of the human brain
 It is divided into two parts
       Right hemisphere
       Left hemisphere
 The hemisphere are connected by a tract of
nerve fibres called  corpus callosum
Cerebral cortex

• Layer of cells which covers the cerebral

hemisphere
• Upward folds are called gyri
• Downward folds are called sulci
Cerebrum
 The cerebrum controls voluntary
movement, intelligence and memory

Area of Thalamus
 It is the centre of sensory and motor

association signalling
Hypothalamus
 Lies at the base of thalamus
 Contains centres which control body
temperature , urge for eating and
drinking
• Frontal lobe-
Thinking,memory,behavior
and movement
• Temporal lope-Hearing,
learning and feelings
• Brain stem-Breathing heart
rate and temperature
• Parietal lobe-language and
touch
• Occipital lobe-Vision
• Cerebellum-Balance and
coordination
Midbrain
• Located between thalamus
and hypothalamus
• Cerebral aqueduct passes
through midbrain
• Function- processing of visual
auditory information
 The hindbrain coordinates
functions that are fundamental to
survival, including respiratory
rhythm, motor activity, sleep, and
wakefulness

Hindbrain consists of-

• Pons
• Cerebellum
• Medulla oblongata
Midbrain ,pons
and medulla • Function of
together form • Pons-control the magnitude and the
brain system frequency of respiration
and forms the • Cerebellum-helps in maintaining posture
balance and equilibrium
connection
between brain • Medulla- controls involuntary actions of the
body
and the spinal
cord
