ABSTRACT
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought changes
in all aspects of life particularly in the education
sector. Called as the new normal, students have
battled on continuing their studies through
distance learning modality via

4
printed modules. This new normal for learning
brought setbacks to many school and students
who juggle work, responsibilities, and
schooling simultaneously.

5
The action research aimed to identify the
barriers encountered by the Senior High School
(SHS) students from Pangpang National High
School (Pangpang NHS) due to the
implementation of Modular Learning.

6
Specifically, the objectives are as follows, it
seeks to answer the following objectives: (1) To
identify the different barriers that the student
encountered in the modular mode of learning.
(2) Determine the limitations or disadvantages of
modular learning.

7
(3) To find out perceptions on modular learning
(4) Identify the coping mechanisms on the
barriers encountered in modular learning.

8
The respondents of the study were the 10
learners who were currently enrolled as Grade
12 students. The sampling technique used to the
respondents is purposive sampling to identify
the sample group in a given population. The
researcher used

9
a semi-structured interview to gather data
necessary for the study. The data collected were
gathered and analyzed their answers to support
the identified questions.
The results of the study revealed that
respondents considered “Poor Time

10
Management” as one of their greatest challenges
encountered. Moreover, the researcher found out
that the respondents have series of solutions to the
identified challenges and thus ranked them from the
most relevant to least relevant.

11
Findings revealed that students
(1) Modular learning may assist a child's learning
development, because the child may develop a
sense of independence and will continually learn
his/her lessons with the absence of the face to
face teaching learning interaction.

12
(2) Modular learning may also lessen a child’s
learning development due to some external factors
or uncontrolled factors found in their homes such
as household chores, social media and the lack of
motivation to do so due to some excessive
activities and assignments.

13
3) Students faced a hard time in understanding
the modules due to poor print quality, unclear
instructions in the activities and the lack of
teacher’s guidance and assistance for a better
understanding of the topic and also the lack of
proper time management.

14
(4) Some students have a difficulty in
understanding complex and abstract problems
in their modules especially the subject math,
some problems are hard to comprehend due to
lack of a systematic and clear explanation.

15
The challenges and barriers were identified
based on their experiences that the students have
encountered such as the quality of printed
modules, statement of instructions in the

16
worksheets, too many numbers of activities,
loads of commitments and their loss of interest
and motivation in doing their task. The data
connoted that students

17
were resourceful enough to address the
problems they encountered in modular distance
learning. The study further revealed that a series
of suggested coping mechanisms may help
learners address their challenges and barriers
properly in terms of

18
Time management, support system,
communication of student and teacher, self-
study/independent learning, being optimistic
and patient, and equipping oneself with the
necessary skills are some of the ways

19
on how students cope with the challenges and
barriers that they encounter in modular
learning modality thus accomplishing their
MDL-SLM properly.
