ASSESSMENT
Psychological Assessment
• “the gathering and integration of psychology-related data
for the purpose of making a psychological evaluation,
accomplished through a variety of tools, including
individual tests, projective tests, clinical interview and
other psychological assessment tools, for the purpose of
assessing diverse psychological function including
abilities, aptitudes, personality characteristics, attitudes,
values, interests, emotions and motivations, among
others, in support of psychological counseling,
psychotherapy and other psychological interventions.”

Psychometrics
• is the field of study concerned with the theory &
technique of psychological measurement, which includes
the measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and
personality traits. The field is primarily concerned with
the study of differences between individuals. Involves 2
major research tasks
⮚ Construction of instruments and procedures for measurement;
⮚ Development and refinement of theoretical approaches to
measurement
Psychological Testing
• refers to “all possible uses, applications,
and underlying concepts of psychological
and educational tests.” Kaplan &
Saccuzzo (2001)

• “a measurement device or technique used
to quantify behavior or aid in the
understanding and prediction of behavior.”

Psychological Test
• “a systematic procedure for observing and
describing one or more characteristics of a
person with the aid of either a numerical
scale or a systematic system.” Nitko
(1983)
Psychological Test
• “a systematic procedure for comparing 2
or more people.” Cronbach (1960, as
cited by Furr & Brubacher, 2008)
❖ test involve behavior samples ;
❖ The behavioral samples must be collected in some systematic way; and
❖ The purpose of tests is to compare behaviors of 2 or more people, or
compare the performance of a single person at different times
PSYCHOMETRICS - refers to the theory,
technique and development of psychological
measurements;
PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING – the
application of tests; and

PSYCHOLOGICAL MEASUREMENT –
the use of tests, among others to do a
psychological evaluation.

• Content
– Aptitude test measures one or more clearly
defined & relatively homogemous segments
of ability
– Personality test measures one or more of the
following: personality traits, dynamic
motivation, personal adjustment, psychiatric
symptoms, social skills and attitudinal
characteristics

• Interpretation of Scores
– Criterion referenced tests and assessments are designed
to measure student performance against a fixed set of
predetermined criteria or learning standards—i.e., concise,
written descriptions of what students are expected to know and
be able to do at a specific stage of their education. In elementary
and secondary education, criterion-referenced tests are used to
evaluate whether students have learned a specific body of
knowledge or acquired a specific skill set. For example, the
curriculum taught in a course, academic program, or 
content area.

• Interpretation of Scores
⮚ Norm referenced refers to standardized tests that are designed
to compare and rank test takers in relation to one another.
Norm-referenced tests report whether test takers performed
better or worse than a hypothetical average student, which is
determined by comparing scores against the performance
results of a statistically selected group of test takers, typically of
the same age or grade level, who have already taken the exam.
