20A302.12 1
Recap

In the previous sessions, we have discussed about:

• Various Engine Components

• Cylinder Block, Cylinder Head, Piston, Crankshaft,

Valves etc.

• Firing orders

• Power Balance charts

20A302.12 2
• Did you experience vibration while traveling
in an automobile?

• Do you know the reasons for vibrations?

20A302.12 3
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be able to:

• State the reasons for vibrations

• Know types of vibration dampers

• State functions of vibration dampers

20A302.12 4
Vibrations

• The power impulses on the piston crown tends to

generate torsional vibrations on the crank shaft

• The thrust on piston is transmitted to crank pin through

piston pin and connecting rod

20A302.12 5
Vibrations

• Crank pin is twisted by this impulse and un-twisted as

piston moves downwards during power stroke

• This twist & un-twist action repeated with every power

impulse which set up an oscillating motion in the Crank

shaft which is called as “Torsional Vibration”

20A302.12 6
Vibrations

• If these are not controlled, it could cause the crankshaft

to break at certain speeds

• The device used to control these torsional vibrations is

called as “Vibration Damper” or “Harmonic Balancer”

Vibration Damper - Function

Vibration dampers are fixed to the

front end of the crank shaft to:
• Reduce Torsional stresses and
vibrations
• Reduce weight of the fly wheel
• Increase the life of crank shaft
• Increase the life of crank pin and
journal bearings

Vibration Damper - Types

Two types:
1. Rubber Floating Type
2. Clutch And Rubber Bush
Type

Rubber Floating Type

20A302.12 Fig. 5 13
Vibration Damper - Types

• Rubber pads are used

between pulley hub and
a small fly wheel
• This is done to allow a
little degree of
movement between
flywheel and crankshaft

Rubber Floating Type

20A302.12 Fig. 6 14
Vibration Damper - Types

• There are friction facings

between hub and flywheel
• A spring is incorporated
for friction regulation

Clutch & Rubber Bush Type
