20A302.9 1
Objectives

On completion of this session, you would be able to know:

• About Connecting Rod

• It’s materials and functions

20A302.9 2
Recap

In the previous session we

have discussed about:

• Necessity of clearance
between piston and cylinder

Connecting Rod

• Connecting Rod is connected between Piston and

the Crank shaft
• It has Small end and big end
• The small end is connected to Piston through
piston pin
• The big end is connected to the Crank Pin of the
Crankshaft.

20A302.9 4
Connecting Rod

• The function of connecting rod is to convert

reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotary
motion of the crank shaft.

• To reduce the obliquity of the rod with the cylinder

axis, its length should be kept as large as possible.

• It possesses oscillatory motion.

• It usually has I-beam cross section

20A302.9 5
Connecting Rod

• Two types of bearings are used in connecting rod

• The big end may be split at right angles to its length

OR
• At an angle in order that it may be assembled on
the crank pin

• The cap is secured to the body of the connecting

rod by two bolts and nuts
20A302.9 6
Connecting Rod

• The small end is usually a solid eye fitted with a

phosphor bronze bush bearing

• At time it is a split eye with a pinching screw to

close the eye round the piston pin

• All connecting rods of an engine should be of equal

weight otherwise noticeable vibrations will be
resulted.

Component Functions
• Converts the reciprocating motion of piston
to rotary with the help of crankshaft

• Should be strong enough to withstand

twisting moments
Connecting Rod
• Act as a link between piston & crankshaft

• Should have high fatigue and creep

strengths
