3D IMAGING 'KEY TO FUTURE OF AUTOMOTIVE'
BY ROSE BROOKE (7 JULY 2014)

There is a recent study talking about 3D measurement and imaging

technologies that have been identified as essential for the advancement of
the automotive sector.
The latest hardware and software that can recognize faces and 3D objects create a solid
foundation for delivering the best solutions across a wide range of applications, according
to the Research and Markets Report on the International Image Recognition Market –
Forecast to 2019.
Even so the power to capture 3D data is still in its inception stage, of course, image
recognition has been applied in almost every field in the modern world. Research and
Markets chose automotive brands Toshiba and Hitachi as pioneers of this increasingly
advanced technology.
The report lists automotive safety, car security, and parking assistance on a long list
involving surveillance, forensics, social media, medical science, and M-commerce, defining
just a few of the major areas where this technology advances.
WHAT IS 3D IMAGING?
We've talked about 3d imaging, but do you know what 3d imaging is?

3D imaging is a method of creating or developing the illusion of depth in an image. 3D imaging

has become a very helpful factor in industrial applications to assist quality control processes. 3D
imaging is a method of manipulating 2D data into a three-dimensional format, creating the
illusion of depth. Many different technologies can help with this method, or develop 3D
renderings for inspection and testing purposes.
COMMON TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL 3D IMAGING
Types of Industrial 3D Imaging :

3D Structured Light – Structured light is a method that uses focused white or colored light
which is then picked up by a special camera and read by programs or developing external
features on an object and then made into a polygon based surface.
• 3D Laser Imaging – also known as 3D Laser Scanning.

3D laser imaging – also known as 3D laser scanning, 3D laser imaging is a method of

capturing data using a laser beam exposed to the surface of an object. The captured data
develops the 3D rendering with the help of the software.
• CT imaging – Computed Tomography (CT) Imaging.

CT Imaging – Imaging Computed Tomography (CT) is a radiographic testing method, using an x-ray source to
penetrate the material and capture 2D x-ray tomographic slices at predetermined increments for a 360-degree
rotating object. When an object rotates and a 2D x-ray image is captured, special software is used to create the
2D image and develop a 3D rendering of the object, which can be used for further analysis of internal and
external parts.
• 3D X-ray Imaging.

3D x-ray imaging – 3D x-ray is a method of taking 2D x-ray images from multiple angles or on an object,
which can be used to create and develop the illusion of depth. For 3D x-ray purposes, 2D x-ray images are
viewed and analyzed separately to focus on a specific area of an object. The difference between CT Scan and
X-ray Imaging is that CT scan is more advanced than X-ray and CT scan is better at scanning than X-ray.
THE USE OF 3D IMAGING IN AUTOMOTIVE
INDUSTRY
3D Imaging has been used a lot in the automotive industry, for example :

Automotive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are the foundation of automation and
continue to improve in automobiles globally. 3D imaging in automotive systems is a major part
of automation.
In many 3D Scanning solutions, such as “Creaform HandySCAN 3D scanner” and “MetraSCAN 3D optical CMM” allow
car manufacturers to bring the physical world, (parts and components), to the virtual world so that from factory production
teams, overseas laboratories and companies offices that can share their important design information according to their
own perspectives and supplies.
