What is RA?

• A risk assessment is a systematic process that involves identifying, analyzing and controlling
hazards and risks by a competent person in the workplace in any potential situation.
• Risk analysis is a process with multiple steps that intends to identify and analyze all of the
potential risks and issues that are detrimental to the business. This is an ongoing process that
gets updated when necessary. These concepts are interconnected and can be used individually.
• Risk communication is the process of exchanging information and opinion on risk to concerned
parties.
• Risk management is the proactive control and evaluation of threats and risks to prevent
accidents, uncertainties and errors. Together with risk assessment, these are all vital elements
that help make informed decisions such as mitigating risks.
Steps of risk assessment

1. Identify Risks - Find possible harm, refer hazard guidance, Check manufacturer instruction or
data sheets.
2. Determine Probability - Discuss the probability of occurrence
3. Determine the Impact - For each hazard you need to be clear about who might be harmed
4. Treat the risk – Decide the precaution method to be implemented
5. Monitor and review the risk - make sure risk assessments are up to date and inclusive of all
potential hazards, they need to be reviewed and potentially updated every time there are
significant changes in the workplace.
Type of risks
• Cost risks -  exceed the budget.

• Schedule risks – delayed

• Performance risks -  project failing to produce the expected results

• Operational risks - poor implementation and process problems such as distribution, procurement, and production.

• Market risks - competition, commodity markets, and foreign exchange

• Governance risks - concerns the company’s top management and other important stakeholders with regard to their ethics
and company reputation

• Strategic risks – incompatibility of tool, job or technology for a particular situation

• Legal risks - consequence of legal obligations, such as law of the land, local laws, and statutory requirements.

• Environmental risks - external hazards that one cannot fully avoid or even foresee.
