1885. március 29-én született (virágvasárnap)

Szabadkán.
Édesapja Kosztolányi Árpád fizika és kémia
professzor, valamint iskolaigazgató volt.
Édesanyja a francia származású Brenner Eulalia.
Köshztolányi a középiskolai tanulmányait
Szabadkán kezdte meg, de tanárával való
konfliktusa miatt kiutasították innen. Szegeden,
magántanulóként éretségizett.
Budapestre költözött, itt magyar-német szakon
tanult. Itt találkozott Babits Mihállyal és Juhász
Gyula költőkkel és életre szóló barátságot kötött
Karinthy Frigyessel is.

1910-ben jelent meg első
verseskötete, a Szegény
kisgyermek panaszai címmel,
“
ami nagy sikert aratott és ez
után szinte minden évben
kiadott egy új kötetet.
1913-ban feleségül vette
Harmos Ilona színésznőt, s
született egy fiuk is, akit
Ádámnak kereszteltek.

Művészetének
jellemzői: Írt lírai költeményeket, novellákat, regényeket,
tanulmányokat.
Kosztolányit Homo Aestheticusnak hívták, mert
nála a szépség volt a fontos. A verseire jellemző a
könnyedség, a forma, az árnyalatok, az érzelmek
sugallata. Nem politizált, nem közéleti költő volt,
mert csak a szépség közvetítése volt számára a
fontos.

A szegény A szegény kisgyermek panaszai c. kötettel
kisgyermek Kosztolányi beírta magát a modern költők sorába. A
panaszai versgyűjteményben a költő újra gyermekké lényegül át.
Saját gyermekkori élményeit, félelmeit eleveníti fel. A
műben kettős látószög érvényesül: a felnőtté, aki
emlékezik és a gyereké, aki rácsodálkozik az őt
körülvevő világra. Az impresszionizmus a gyermek
szemén érvényesül, hiszen az mindent olyannakhisz,
ahoyg azt éppen a pillanatnyi benyomások hatására
látja. A kötetbesz szerepel a Mostan színes tintákról
álmodom c. költemény is.
