LESSON #4:

ARITHMETIC MEANS
Arithmetic mean
•Arithmetic mean is the term between any two
terms of an arithmetic sequence.
•The arithmetic mean between two numbers is
the average of the two numbers .
•If two or more arithmetic means are to be
inserted, find first the common difference using
the formula
•d =
Example 1
Find the arithmetic mean
between-12 and -2
Solution:
Get the average of -12 and -2
[(-12) +(- 2) ] ÷2 = -14÷2 = -7
Ans.-7
Example 2
Find the arithmetic mean between 0.8
and 2.2
Solution:
(0.8 + 2.2 )÷2 = 3÷2 = 1.5
Ans.1.5
Example 3

Find the arithmetic mean between ½

and ¼
Solution:
(2/4 +1/4)÷ 2 = 3/4÷2 = ¾ x ½ = 3/8
Ans. 3/8
Example 4
Find the arithmetic mean between x-4
and x+4.
Solution:
(x -4 + x+ 4)÷ 2 = 2x÷2 = x
Ans. x
Example 5
Find the arithmetic mean between n
and n+1
Solution

Ans.
Arithmetic means
•Arithmetic means are the terms between any
two terms of an arithmetic sequence.
•If two or more arithmetic means are to be
inserted, find first the common difference using
the formula
d =
• Use
the common difference to determine the arithmetic
means.
Example 1
Insert 3 arithmetic means between 2 and 22 2,
__,__,__, 22
d=
d == = 5
2+5=7
7+ 5 = 12
12 + 5 = 17
Ans. 7, 12, 17
Example 2
Insert 2 arithmetic means between -5 and 1
d=
d = = =2
-5 + 2 = -3
-3 + 2 = -1
Ans. -3 , -1
Example 3
Insert 5 arithmetic means between 24 and -12
d=
d= = =-6
24-6 = 18
18-6 = 12
12-6 = 6
6-6 = 0
0-6 =-6
Ans.18, 12, 6, 0, -6
