ARITHMETIC MEANS
ARITHMETIC MEAN
-the term between any two non-consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequences.
 Example: Insert 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25.
Solution: Since we are required to insert 4 terms, then there will be 6 terms in all.
Let a 1=5 and a 6=25 . We will insert a 2 , a3 , a 4 ,a 5:
 First thing to do is to get the common  Next thing to do is to find the arithmetic means
difference. by using the value of d.
𝒅=
(𝒂𝒏 − 𝒂𝟏 ) a 2=5+ ( 2−1 ) 4 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + ሺ𝒏 − 𝟏ሻ𝒅
(𝒏 − 𝟏)
(𝟐𝟓 − 𝟓) a 2=5+ ( 1 )4 a 3 = 5 + ሺ3 − 1ሻ4 a 4 = 5 + ሺ4 − 1ሻ4 a 5 = 5 + ሺ5 − 1ሻ4
𝒅= a 3 = 5 + ሺ2ሻ4 a 4 = 5 + ሺ3ሻ4 a 5 = 5 + ሺ4ሻ4
(𝟔 − 𝟏) a 2=5+4 a 5 = 5 + 16
𝟐𝟎 a3 = 5 + 8 a 4 = 5 + 12
𝒅=
𝟓
a 2=9 𝐚𝟑 = 𝟏𝟑 𝐚𝟒 = 𝟏𝟕 𝐚𝟓 = 𝟐𝟏
𝒅= 𝟒

Therefore the 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25 are 9, 13, 17, and 21.
