QUIZ #4.1: POLYNOMIAL ARITHMETIC

Math Standard Score

4.1: I can perform basic arithmetic operations on POLYNOMIAL expressions.

ADDING & SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS: Simplify each expression below. Show your work.

2 2
1. Find the SUM of the polynomials 5𝑥 + 𝑥 − 3 and 2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 1. Show your work step by step, and write your
final answer in STANDARD FORM.
2 2
5𝑥 + 𝑥 − 3 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 1
2 2
(5𝑥 + 2𝑥 ) (𝑥 − 𝑥) (− 3 + 1)
2
7𝑥 − 2

2 2
2. SUBTRACT 5𝑥 + 𝑥 − 3 from 2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 1. Show your work step by step, and write your final answer in
STANDARD FORM.

2 2
2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 1 − (5𝑥 + 𝑥 − 3)
2 2
2𝑥 − 𝑥 + 1 − 5𝑥 − 𝑥 + 3
2 2
(2𝑥 − 5𝑥 ) (− 𝑥 − 𝑥)(1 + 3)
2
− 3𝑥 − 2𝑥 + 4

3. SUMMARIZE: When can you add (or subtract) two variable terms? Be specific and use mathematical vocabulary.

You can add or subtract polynomial variable terms when the like terms are the same, but also the degree that
it is to is the same too . Let's say the number has the same like term but it is to a different degree you can add or
subtract them . for example : 2x^3 and 2x^3. Even though they have the same variable it can't be added or
subtracted together.

4. 𝑚 (3𝑚 − 𝑚 + 1)
2
𝑚(3𝑚 ) 𝑚(− 𝑚) 𝑚(1)
3 2
3𝑚 − 1𝑚 + 1𝑚

5. (4𝑛 + 5)(4𝑛 − 5)

4𝑛(4𝑛 − 5) 5(4𝑛 − 5)
16𝑛 − 20𝑛 + 20𝑛 − 25
16𝑛 + 0𝑛 − 25
16𝑛 − 25

6. The original length, L, and original width, W, of a rectangular garden are BOTH increased by 3 feet each.
Write an expression to show:

A. the AREA of the NEW rectangle

A= (L+3) x (W+3)

B. the PERIMETER of the NEW rectangle

P = 2(L+3)+ 2(W+3)

C. If the PERIMETER of the NEW rectangle is 52 feet, find one possible combination of the ORIGINAL length
and width for this rectangle. Hint: There is more than one answer possible.

52= 2(L+w)
52=2(20+6)
