Quarter 2 – Module 5b (Week 2):
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
Self-Learning Module
Introduction of the Lesson
This module is about Polynomial Functions. You will learn how to understand and
interpret the graph of polynomial functions. You are given problems involving polynomial
functions. Don’t worry because you will be guided on how to solve the different task in the
module. If ever you stumble to items that are unclear, feel free to go back.
LESSON 3
You will be applying what you learned from polynomial functions in some of the real-
life situations.
Examples:
4. Bring all terms to the left side of the equal sign and equate to zero.
Remember to change signs.
𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 72 = 0
Solve for 𝑥.
(𝑥 + 9) = 0 , 𝑥 = −9
(𝑥 − 8) = 0 , 𝑥=8
6. Check.
𝑥 = −9 𝑥=8
(−9)2 + (−9) = 72 (8)2 + (8) = 72
81 + (−9) = 72 64 + 8 = 72
𝑥 2 + (𝑥 + 3)2 = 152
𝑥 2 + (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 3) = 225
𝑥 2 + 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 9 = 225
4. Bring all terms to the left side of the equal sign and equate to zero.
𝑥 2 + 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 9 − 225 = 0
2𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 216 = 0
2(𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 108) = 0
2(𝑥 + 12)(𝑥 − 9) = 0
Solve for 𝑥.
(𝑥 + 12) = 0 , 𝑥 = −12
Disregard -12
(𝑥 − 9) = 0 , 𝑥=9
6. Check.
𝑥=9
𝑥 2 + (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 3) = 225
(9)2 + (9 + 3)(9 + 3) = 225
81 + (12)(12) = 225
225 = 225
4. Bring all terms to the left side of the equal sign and equate to zero.
Remember to change signs.
8𝑥 3 + 34𝑥 2 + 31𝑥 − 10 − 605 = 0
8𝑥 3 + 34𝑥 2 + 31𝑥 − 615 = 0
5. Factor the equation. Use the Rational Root Theorem. These are some possible roots
±1, ±2, ±3, ±4
3 8 34 31 -615
24 174 615
8 58 205 0
6. Check.
𝑥=3
(𝑥 + 2)(4𝑥 − 1)(2𝑥 + 5) = 605
(3 + 2)(4[3] − 1)(2[3] + 5) = 605
(5)(11)(11) = 605
605 = 605
