Whenever Mill lube oil filter
DP high alarm appear

• Confirm from PMS/Event log,whether the

alarm is from LP
pump or reducer pump
• Put the respective standby pump also into
service and
changeover lube oil filter and clean the
choked one
a) Reducer flow low trip actuates if flow is
<45 LPM
and pressure is <0.75 ksc--[2FS &

Whenever any seal air fan trips and its
discharge valve not closed

• Running seal air fan tripped on over

loaded.
 Reduce seal air DP( around 350 mmwc)

 Reduce particular mill end airflow

 Reduce PA Header pressure

• Take oil gun in other running Mill

• Immediately close suction damper of
tripped seal air fan
from local (to avoid backflow of seal air)
• Incase Mill trips on seal air header
pressure very low
follow steps mentioned in case of mill
tripping.
Whenever any Mill current
starts hunting
• Mill current start hunting by around 10A
whenever stones
are getting filled in the mill through feeder.
It is observed
 Mill current comes down by few amperes

for half an hour.

 Current reaches around 200A

 Noise level comes down

 Mill level goes up

• Start mill purging (Keep mill noise level

constant by
regulating feeder speed in manual)
• After few hours of purging, Mill current
and noise level
improves gradually. Increase feeder speed
gradually.
• If Mill current does not come down even
after prolonged
never any running Mill PA General inl
got closed (due to failure of I/P conve

• Follow steps mentioned in case of mill

tripping.
• Reduce feeder speed/stop feeder if Mill
level going very
high
• Get the PA General gate problem
attended ,also open it
and normalize milling system and take
out oil support
Whenever any Mill main Primary
air damper flow starts hunting

• Say, when Mill AB/CD are in service ,end

'C' main air flow
starts hunting
• To avoid tripping of elevation 'D' on
ignition energy when
end 'C' air flow comes below 12 TPH, take
oil support in
mill CD
• Get the flow feedback problem attended
otherwise Change

FIRE IN BALL & TUBE
MILLS
Reasons for fire:
• Entrapment of foreign material in ribbon
conveyor thus breaking the connecting rods
resulting in pulverized coal accumulation in the
screw area leading to fire.
• One end operation of mill without slight opening
of the damper on non-operating end. This may
result in coal dust accumulation on non-operating
end and consequently fire will start.
• Ball and coal dust accumulation in hot air box
(dead zone) resulting in fire.
• Non-functioning of mill level Delta “P”
(choking of tubes) resulting in uncontrolled raw
coal feeding to mill and choking the mill.
•  Accumulation of pulverized coal near the
closed PF purge damper
Avoiding Mill Fire

• Breakage of Tie rods is a possibility due to which

PF can accumulate in screw conveyor zone. Mill
should be taken into shutdown and maintenance
should take up the repair works.
• Steam inerting at the time of starting and stopping
the mill
• Mill should not be run without coal feeding to the
mill for more than 10 minutes
• Both ends of the mill should be kept in service
• Purging of mill for 10 minutes every time, before
stopping.
• If a mill is stopped without emptying coal,Keep
aux motor in service for a minimum of 4 hrs
Detection of mill fire:
• Abnormal rise in mill outlet temperature.

are closed, a 60 sec purge timer is started ,after that:
 PC pipes purging mill and classifiers are inerted with
steam for 240 sec and closing of steam inerting valves
after 240 sec.
 Starting of girth gear seal air fan
 Opening of NDE side mill outlet gates
 Starting of any one trunnion seal air fan
Step 3
 Establishing girth gear greasing system when the
mill main motor is on.
 Mill main motor starting if all the conditions for
mill main motor are present and mill auxiliary
motor is stopped before starting of main motor.
Step 4
 PA general shut off opening cold PA shut off gate
is opened
 Opening of feeder outlet gate of side NDE
 Hot and cold air dampers of NDE side are
released to AUTO
 Bypass and air to mill control dampers of side
NDE are released to AUTO
Step-5
 If the mill outlet temp is correct ,the feeder on the
selected side is started
 As the feeder is on a command feeder set point at
filling value is given to auto controls for rapidly
filling the mill 30 sec later if the coal level in the
mill is representative and mill DP value is more
than adequate ,the feeder is released to auto
operation
STARTING OF MILL-SIDE –NDE
WHEN MILL SIDE DE IS IN
