Examples of Caption

A caption, also known as a cutline, is a text that


appears below an image. Most captions draw
attention to something in the image that is not
obvious, such as its relevance to the text.
Captions can consist of a few words of description, or several sentences.
Along with the title, lead, and section headings, captions are the most
commonly read words in an article, so they should be succinct and
informative.

Captions also include a short title or heading of an article in a magazine or


newspaper. Words shown on a cinema or television screen to establish the
scene of a story are also called captions. Captions can also be inserted
below/above charts, figures, graphics and tables.

There are several criteria for a good caption. A good caption clearly
identifies the subject of the picture without detailing the obvious. It is
succinct. It establishes the picture's relevance to the article, provides context
for the picture, and draws the reader into the article

How to Write Caption?

1.Observe the selected photo or video (Observasi foto atau video yang telah dipilih)
2.Find out the message from the picture (Cari pesan yang ingin disampaikan dari gambar)
3.Write concise phrase or sentence under the picture (Tulis frasa atau kalimat ringkas di bawah
gambar)
A Note to Remember

There are several things you need to remember when you want to make a caption, including the
following:
1. Avoid using articles: a, an, or the.
2. Use the present tense.
3. Caption provides an explanation that is not found in the image
4. The caption completes the image, not a substitute for the image
5. No need to start with name
6. No need to add something obvious, like: pictured here, above.
7. You can mention the name if it's really necessary.
Types of Captions

1.Identification bar
This type of caption only mentions who is in the picture
2.Cutline

This type of cutline caption is what we most often find in pictures and writings in newspapers and
media both offline and online. The caption cutline states who is in the image and what is being
searched for, for example as below. The English caption in the image below is taken from
thejakartapost.com
3.Summary

While in the caption summary, the information we get in the complementary text is more detailed. There is
information What, Who, Where, When. Usually the task of making an example of an English 5w 1h caption is

4.Expanded
Next is the caption with the most complete information. This type of expanded caption is a development of the

5.Group Identification
The group identification caption looks the same as the identification bar caption example. It's just that the
subject is a group of people, for example as below taken from cbc.ca
6.Quote
Contains someone's quote related to the image.
While the example of this quote caption is quite easy to find on image media such as Instagram. Quotes
have often been used to convey messages indirectly. If accompanied by a picture that matches the contents
of the word b if the meaning is stronger, for example below
2.Cutline
Jenis caption ini hanya menjelaskan siapa orang yang ada digambar serta apa yang dilakukannya.
3.Summary
Jenis caption ini memberikan penjelasan lengkap siapa yang ada digambar, apa yang dilakukan, kapan
terjadinya, dimana lokasi terjadinya, dan mengapa hal itu terjadi. 
4.Expanded
Ini lebih lengkap dari summary, terkadang juga memuat bagaimana kejadiannya serta ada kutipannya. 
5.Group Identification
Hampir sama dengan caption identification bar, biasanya digunakan untuk gambar yang memuat lebih dari
1 orang.
6.Quote
Berisi kutipan ucapan seseorang yang berhubungan dengan gambar.
