Extreme Tourism

LO: To explain why extreme tourism is growing in ice environments.

1. What type of erosion is it when material is scraped along the ground

by a moving glacier carving out the land?

2. How many corries does it take to form a pyramidal peak?

3. What is formed as a glacier melts and the meltwater fills a corrie?

4. What glacial features can we use to provide evidence for the direction
of an advancing glacier?

5. Where would you find lateral moraine?

6. Where would you find terminal moraine?

7. What sort of lake is formed as a glacier retreats and meltwater fills

eroded land?
1. What type of erosion is it when material is scraped along the ground by a
moving glacier carving out the land?
Abrasion

2. How many corries does it take to form a pyramidal peak?

Three

3. What is forms as a glacier melts and the meltwater fills a corrie?

A tarn
4. What glacial features can we use to provide evidence for the direction of an
advancing glacier?

Drumlins, Erratic's and moraine

5. Where would you find lateral moraine?
At the edges of a glacier
6. Where would you find terminal moraine?
At the end of a glacier (the extent of the glacial maximum)
7. What sort of lake is formed as a glacier retreats and meltwater fills eroded
land?
Ribbon
Watch the video and list as many different types of
extreme tourism as you can. Also try to pay attention to
the type of people taking part in extreme tourism.
So what were they doing and who were the
people doing it?

• Fairly young – late 20s early 30s usually.

• Often unmarried – although this is less important.
• NO CHILDREN
• Both have Good jobs providing good salaries
• DINKS – Dual income no kids!

Task
Draw a spider diagram and write in the labels above
Try to add in a simple explanation as to why each factor is important
e.g No kids is important as you can’t do extreme sports where you
could easily get hurt whilst looking after your children.
• Fairly young – late 20s early 30s usually.
Have the time, energy and motivation to go out and see the world

• Often unmarried – although this is less important.

No commitments or attachments meaning they have more freedom
to explore the world

• Both have Good jobs providing good salaries

Travelling can be expensive, especially to extreme environments so a
large income helps fund trips

• DINKS – Dual income no kids!

No children means you do not have anyone to look after or pay for
and you have more time for yourself. You can also take more risks
Antarctica – Extreme tourism destination
Why is Antarctica considered an extreme tourist destination?
Use the info below to help you write a paragraph outlining why
Antarctica is considered an extreme environment.
Why are tourist numbers to Antarctica increasing?

Task
Next to each of the
images on your sheet
write an explanation of
why tourism in
Antarctica has grown.
Watch the video about the growth of tourism in
Antarctica……
Task
• Describe the trends shown by the two
graphs – use data from the graphs in your
description.

• Try to explain why the number of tourists

may continue to rise but the number of
ships stop rising, AND why these increased
numbers are seen as a potential problem.
Describe the trends shown by the two graphs – use data from the graphs in your
description.
• As the number of tourists increase so do the number of ships. From
1981 to 1996 the number of tourists has increased from less than a
1000 to 12,000, this is an 11,000 increase in 15 years.
• There has also been an increase from 2 to 15 ships in the same
time, although the number of ships has fallen from 16 to 15 from
1995 to 1996.

Try to explain why the number of tourists may continue to rise but the number
of ships stop rising, AND why these increased numbers are seen as a potential
problem.
• As the number of tourists increase so do the size of the ships
arriving. This is increase the number of tourists on each ship and to
reduce the number of ships and cause overcrowding
• The increased number of tourists is seen as a potential problem as
it shows Antarctica is becoming more popular. This will ultimately
lead to more ships and increased environmental issues
Plenary

It is most likely that tourism to Antarctica will keep on growing.

What measures could be taken to reduce the impact or even reduce

the numbers of tourists?
