BS ES 2

1
What is Earthquake?

• An Earthquake is the vibration of the Earth

produced by an abrupt release of energy.

2
FAULTS

• Is a fracture, crack or break formation on

the ground.

3
Normal Fault
• This is the most common type of fault. It
forms when rock above an inclined
fracture plane moves downward, sliding
along the rock on the other side of the
fracture.

5
Reverse Fault
• A dip-slip fault in which the upper block,
above the fault plane, moves up and over
the lower block.

6
METEOROLOGY

• Meteorology is the study of the

atmosphere, atmospheric phenomena, and
atmospheric effects on our weather.
Examples: Rain, wind and snow

8
OCEANOGRAPHY

• Oceanography, also known as oceanology

and ocean science, is the scientific study
of the oceans.
Example: the study of how waves form

9

10
GEOLOGY

• Geology is the scientific study of the earth.

Examples: the study of rocks and stones

A VIEW OF EARTH

14
4 MAJOR SPHERES:

• HYDROSPHERE
• ATMOSPHERE
• GEOSPHERE
• BIOSPHERE

15
HYDROSPHERE

• The hydrosphere is simply the total of all

the water in Earth’s atmosphere.

Examples: seas, lakes, rivers

16

17
ATMOSPHERE

• An atmosphere is the layers of gases

surrounding a planet or other celestial
body.
Examples: clouds and winds

18
Fig. 2.1 ATMOSPHERE

19
GEOSPHERE

• The geosphere includes the rocks and

minerals on Earth.
• Examples: Continents, the ocean floor, all
of the rocks on the surface, and all of the
sand in the deserts

20

21
BIOSPHERE

• The biosphere is made up of the parts of

Earth where life exists—all ecosystems.
Examples: where live occurs on, above and
below the surface of Earth.
