Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking and presenting to
different audiences for various purposes (CMO No. 20, S. 2013). Translated
in Filipino: “Ang Malayuning Komunikasyon ay pagsulat, pagsasalita at
paglalahad para sa iba’t ibang madla at iba’t ibang layunin”.

Meaning of Communication
Since communication is a growing industry today, its meaning can be expanded in many ways:

1. Communication is a process of transmitting or conveying information to others.

2. Communication is a system (as telephones, computers, others digital gadgets) for transmitting or exchanging
information.
3. Communication is the act or process of using work, sources, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information
or to express ideas, thoughts, feelings etc. to someone else.

4. Communication is a message that is given to someone such as letter, telephone call, etc.

5. Communication is a way of sending information to people by using technology (radio, wireless or electronic
communication, etc.

Communication is a process of sending and receiving information among people. Humans
communicate with others not only by face-to-face communication, but also by giving
information via the Internet and printed products such as books and newspapers. Many
people believe that the significance of communication is like the importance of breathing.
Indeed, communication facilitates the spread of knowledge and forms relationships
between people.

Communication helps to spread knowledge and information among people.

Communication helps people to express their ideas and feelings and at the same time
helps us to understand emotion and thoughts of others.

Every day, we communicate with a lot of people including our families, our colleagues,
or even strangers. We should learn how to communicate effectively to make our lives
better.

Importance of Non-Verbal Communication
1. It complements or adds to verbal sounds.
Example: pointing and nodding the head while speaking
2. It shows interest or regulates the flow of interaction.
Examples: hand signal of divers; raising the hand to show you want to say
something
3. It can contradict verbal meaning by displaying opposite behavior.
Examples: sarcasm; facial expression
4. It can create and control others’ perception about yourself.
Examples: using a car, a beautiful house; a jewelry to create an impression
about yourself

Classification of Verbal Communication
Verbal communication includes oral (spoken) and written
communication.
Oral communication consists of all spoken
exchanges.

 Casual conversations among friends as well as political deabtes

Non-Verbal Communication
It is the second type or kind of communication. Different writers and authors
define non-verbal communication as follows:
 Non-verbal communication – refers to a wide array of behaviors by which we
communicate message without the use of the voice – Mcdermott (2008).
 Non-verbal communication is when information is transferred from sender to
receiver without the use of words – Lord, et al. (2012)
Other define non-verbal communication as the act or process of exchanging
information with the use of signs or behaviors to express ideas, thoughts, and
feelings to someone else.

Choose short, familiar, conversational words
