IGNITION SYSTEM

Objectives

 Tolearn the function and meaning of

ignition system
 To learn the main parts and it’s functions
of ignition system and;
 Tolearn what are the defects of our
ignition system and how to diagnose it’s
defect
What is ignition system?

 An ignition system generates a spark or

heats an electrode to a high temperature
to ignite a fuel-air mixture in spark ignition
internal combustion engines, oil-fired and
gas-fired boilers, rocket engines, etc.
Main parts of ignition system

 Battery
 Ignition switch
 Ignition coil
 Distributor
 Spark plug
Battery

 A battery ignition system has a 6- or 12-volt battery

charged by an engine-driven generator to supply
electricity, an ignition coil to increase the voltage, a
device to interrupt current from the coil, a distributor
to direct current to the correct cylinder, and a spark
plug projecting into each cylinder.
Ignition Switch

 The ignition switch is party of an assembly, or

system, that includes the ignition lock cylinder.
The entire mechanism is responsible for starting
your car as well as providing power to specific
areas of the vehicle, such as the electronic
accessories, the ignition, and the engine.
Ignition Coil

 An ignition coil is an induction coil in an automobile's

ignition system that transforms the battery's voltage
to the thousands of volts needed to create an
electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel.
Distributor

 A distributor is an enclosed rotating switch

used in spark-ignition internal
combustion engines that have
mechanically timed ignition. The
distributor's main function is to route high
voltage current from the ignition coil to the
spark plugs in the correct firing order, and for
the correct amount of time.
Spark Plug

 Yourspark plugs are what supply the

spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture,
creating the explosion which makes your
engine produce power. These small but
simple plugs create an arc of electricity
across two leads which are not touching, but
close enough together that electricity can
jump the gap between them.
Ignition System Problems

 Car fails to start

 Key will not turn
 Flickering of dashboards
 No noise from starter motor
How to diagnose ignition system
problems
 Verify lack of spark
 Check for any obvious issues
 Prove for power
 Double check firing order
 Double check initial timing
 Test spark plug wires
