INTRODUCTION
In this age of information explosion, obtaining data about almost anything
has become effortless. The challenge is to sift through the vast amount of
available information through a critical evaluation of information sources. Its
purpose is to ensure that we anchor or conclusions about a topic on accurate data.

This appraisal of information sources is particularly essential in the context


of online activities. We should be able to evaluate the numerous materials (such as
videos) we see on social media platforms critically to protect ourselves against the
massive misinformation on the internet. One way of doing such an evaluation is
comparing and contrasting content of what we watch online with that of a
trustworthy outside source.
The comparison and
contrasting must
encompass two crucial
elements:

HOW DO WE LOOK FOR THE effectiveness OF A
MATERIAL?
We survey materials on the net to look for correct
pieces of information on topics that interest and
are essential to us. Cross-checking against those
of reputable sources will enable us to ascertain
whether that purpose is met.

Guide questions:
a) Does the content of the source match the information
you need?
b) Are the pieces of information provided up to date?
c) Does the information source not leave questions
unanswered (ask the "five W's and H" to check: who,
what, when, where, why, and how)?
d) Are all pieces of information verifiable? Are
conclusions based on research or actual figures that
can be checked in other sources?

BUT WHAT IS ACCESSIBILTY?
Accessibility refers to the ease with which users
perceive and understand the content of a source.
Evaluating it requires one to take a closer look at
formatting, availability of non-textual and
language used.

a) Does it only include essential information?


b) Does it use words suitable for the audience?
c) Does it use sentences that are short and easy to
understand?
d) Does it avoid jargon or acronyms?
e) Does it explain new or difficult concepts?
f) Does it have pictures (for extra meaning)?
g) Does it use an easy-to-read layout?
