BACKGROUND
• Known by the name of Antonio Lombardo or
Francisco Antonio Pigafetta
• Pigafetta was born in a wealthy Vicenza family in 1491
and died in the same city in 1534
• In his youth he studied astronomy, geography, and
cartography.
• He was also an Italian seafarer and geographer
• He joined the expedition to the Spice Islands led by
explorer Ferdinand Magellan under the flag of King
Charles I of Spain and, after Magellan's death in the
Philippines, the subsequent voyage around the world.
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND
On 10 August 1519, five ships departed from Seville for what
was to become the first circumnavigation of the globe. Linked by
fame to the name of its captain, Magellan, much of the expedition is
knownthrough the travelogue of one of the few crew members who
returned to Spain, Antonio Pigafetta. A narrative and cartographic
record of the journey ncluding 23 hand-drawn watercolour charts)
from Patagonia to Indonesia, from the Philippines to the Cape of
Good Hope, Pigafetta's The First Voyage around the World is a
classic of discovery and exploration literature.

•He described the people of Latronis as "thieves".
•The latroni thought, according to the signs which they made, that there were no people in the world but
themselves.
•The Islanders in latroni took whatever they could from his ship as payment for the food and water they had
given the crew.
•According to pigafetta, in the other island of the Philippines locals like Rajjah Humankn and his wife
Juana welcome Magellan and his crew festively and peacefully.
•Rajah Humanon, his wife and hundreds of his crew were baptized, as they accept Christianity which was
offered by magellan.
•The islanders way of life, cultural practices, and religions was based on what they could get or obtain in
their island.
POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE

• In the document a lot of the political customs was about the kings of the Islands. The kings were treated

with loyalty and superiority by its people.

• Examples of this treatment is that the king is always seated under an awning of mats and the king's cup was

always kept covered and no one else drank from it. •The kings were also smarter they know mkre languages

than other people.


ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE

~It opened doors in the places where they passed, where people, ideas and goods were coming and

going. It established commercial contacts between East and West that remained for centuries. Also, it

promoted the exchange of multiple sorts of experiences scientific, cultural, religious.
