Etymology of the word “VOCATION”
Vocation comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means to

call. Based on the etymology of the word, vocation, therefore,
means a call. If there is a call, there must be a caller and
someone who is called.

Teaching as Vocation
● A teacher who practices teaching as his/her vocation

responds to the strong feeling, or calling for service, just
like historic biblical figures, with utmost dedication.

Etymology of the word “MISSION”
The word mission comes from the Latin word “misio” which
means “to send”. You are called to be a teacher and you sent
into the world to accomplish a mission, to teach.

Teaching as a Mission
● Teacher expected to contribute betterment of this world in unique

way.
● To teach is to influence every child entrusted in your care to
become better and happier.
● To teach is to help the child become more human.


PROFESSION
● A calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long

Planning the Teaching Process

Planning includes creating learning experiences for reaching prespecified
goals, determining teaching methods and techniques, and practices and
evaluation activities (AydÕn, 2008).
Burden and Byrd (1994) states that annual plans are significant for teachers
and preparing semester, unit, weekly and daily plans constitutes a route
guide for determining when to teach what.

Morrison, Ross, and Kemp (2004) mention that while planning, it is necessary
to determine how much time it will take the student to acquire the required
knowledge, where the teaching process will take place, and how the
students’ learning achievement will be evaluated. And planning, which
occupies a dominant place in the teaching process, is the teachers’ most
significant responsibility (Gözütok, 2004).
According to Moyles (1992), the majority of the disciplinary problems

emerge when the teachers cannot begin their lessons in the way they
planned.
OFFERING VARIETY
Monotony is one of the most important factors that lead the teaching process
to be boring and disciplinary problems to arise in the classroom. (Erden,
2007).

1. Better Planning and Preparation
-Effective planning and preparation are essential in maximizing

student learning time. Teachers should get in the habit of over-
planning— too much is always better than not enough. In addition,
teachers should always have their materials laid out and ready to go
before students arrive.

2. Create Efficient Procedure
-Classroom procedures are an essential part of the learning

environment. Those teachers who operate their classroom like a well-
oiled machine maximize student learning time. Teachers should
develop efficient procedures for every aspect of the classroom. This
includes routine activities such as sharpening pencils,
turning in assignments, or getting into groups.

3. Give Clear and Concise Directions
- A major component in teaching is providing your students with clear

and concise directions. In other words, directions should be easy to
understand and as simple and straightforward as possible. Poor or
confusing directions can stop a lesson and quickly turn the learning
environment into total chaos.

4. Have a Backup Plan
- No amount of planning can account for everything that could go

wrong in a lesson. Having a backup plan ready can ensure that learning
time for that class period will not be lost. In an ideal world, everything will
always go according to plan, but the classroom environment is often far
from ideal. Teachers should develop a set of backup plans to fall back
on should things fall apart at any point.

5. Maintain Control of Classroom Environment
- Many teachers lose valuable instructional time because they

have poor classroom management skills. Teachers must develop
and maintain effective classroom management skills where
learning is valued, the teacher is respected, and expectations
and procedures are set and met beginning on day one. In other
words, set rules or guidelines prior to the class proper.

1. Know your students
- Invest in your students. Learn their names, interests, and

backgrounds. Greet and visit with them before and after class.
Keep track of their progress. Provide opportunities for
students to learn each other's’ names as well so a sense of
community is developed.
2. Foster a safe environment
- Manage class conversations. Ensure that student

comments are met with courtesy and respect. Never permit
yourself or others to belittle what others may say. Avoid
sarcasm; it’s too often misunderstood. Insure that any
feedback given is never demeaning.
3. Make it relevant
- If students do not see how the conversation pertains to

them, they are less motivated to participate. Help them
draw connections. Connect the material to previous
knowledge. Find pertinent examples to draw them in.

4. Involve everyone
- Call students by name to answer a question. Don’t select

the first person to raise his/her hand. Allow for pauses to
encourage more responses. Help shy students to participate.
Train the class to be inclusive with prompts such as “Let’s hear
from somebody who hasn’t commented.”
5. Use multiple form of engagement
- With instructor-led discussions, only one person

can speak at a time, thus limiting participation. By
structuring collaborative activities, many students
can simultaneously converse in smaller groups.

Self-evaluation
Change and evolution require self-awareness. Educators
must cultivate the ability to see themselves clearly and
objectively through reflection and self-analysis. This way,
they see what is happening around them, learn from the
situation, and can be able to make the necessary
adjustments.
Adaptability
The teaching work is especially demanding and consistently
changing; so, being able to respond effectively to an uncertain
environment is widely considered an essential ability for
educators.

Communication
By the very nature of our profession, teachers are constantly interacting with a great
number of people: students, parents, colleagues, administrators, etc. And, although the
rapports that teachers establish with the surrounding adults are important too, we are
focusing on what happens in the classroom with students.
A fundamental and challenging part of teaching is being understood quickly and
accurately by students. So, the success of the students’ learning process is guaranteed
when the message gets across to them and effective communication is established.

Organization
As teachers, we all know that classrooms are unpredictable
environments. And consequently, one of the many tasks of teachers
is organizing and preparing for what might come up unexpectedly.
Generally, organized educators promote more effective learning

environments, which greatly benefit the academic advancement of
students. When the classroom runs smoothly and efficiently, that
orderly atmosphere contributes to an efficient transfer of knowledge.
Leadership
The role of a leader in a classroom implies that students trust a teacher enough to:
Follow their lead;
Allow themselves to be influenced, and even changed.
This is a direct consequence of having excellent communication skills. That is,
cultivating an atmosphere of openness and reliability fosters an educational
environment where student empowerment can develop unhindered. An educator that
promotes confidence, honesty, commitment, integrity, and growth becomes a positive
role model.

Pedagogical learning
Teachers’ efficacy is, arguably, the product of three

aspects:
1. Deep knowledge of the subject-matter or content area;

2. Professional experience;
3. Development of teaching skills.

Innovation & Research

Nowadays, innovation, imagination, and creativity are
having an increasingly prominent role in classrooms.
Educational environments are constantly evolving and
adapting to social and technological changes, so
teachers need to find new powerful tools to keep
students engaged and on task.
Continuous learning
Being a dedicated teacher means going through a lifelong learning
process. So, an educator who has a clear sense of improvement
and progress should consider continuous learning a priority.
In order to maintain and improve efficiency, educators should keep

themselves up-to-date regarding instructional methods,
educational technology, the curriculum, etc.
