TOPIC: CYBERBULLYING
What is cyberbullying and the effects of
it?
What is
cyberbullying?
+ Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person. This form of bullying can easily
go undetected because of lack of parental supervision.

+ Online forums, chat rooms, and message boards are some of the most common places where
cyberbullying occurs. Cyberbullying can also take place on social media sites such as Facebook,
Instagram, Snapchat, and Tik Tok. It can also occur through text messaging and messaging apps on
mobile or tablet devices.
How does
cyberbullying
occur?
+ Cyberbullying happens because we are not brave enough to confront another person, we’re too
scared to get caught. And frankly we don’t think we’ll ever get in trouble if we simply hide our identity.

+ We feel protected by an anonymous shield. “They’ll never know who we are, therefore we cannot get
in trouble for our actions.”

+ I believe the most heartbreaking thing about cyberbullying is that in this day in age youths don't have
enough face-to-face interactions to develop a strong sense of verbal communication. Instead of bashing
another person directly and suffering the consequences, we go online and post what we ignorantly
think about other people. And since we can't see the facial expressions of the person behind the screen
we assume that what we did wasn't a big deal. It seems like we've forgotten that there's an actual
human being on the receiving end. A human being with complex feelings and thoughts.
What are the effects of
cyberbullying?
It can make people change in behavior due to the effects of cyberbullying. For example:
+ Finding it hard to concentrate on schoolwork
+ Grades dropping
+ Losing interest in activities that they normally enjoy
+ Skipping school or expressing a desire to skip school
+ Appearing angry when looking at their phone, tablet, or computer

Physical effects of cyberbullying:

Behavioral and mental changes are not the only effects of cyberbullying. There can be physical effects
as well. Intense feelings of stress and anxiety due to cyberbullying can result in physical issues such as
insomnia, gastrointestinal issues, and harmful eating patterns.

1. Self-education

harsh comment from a classmate. Learn about cyberbullying so that you and your students can
recognize it.

2. Establish a communication-friendly relationship

In a bullying situation, the victim frequently approaches parents and teachers who are easy to talk to –
trustworthy communication partners. Assure your students that they will be heard if they come to you.

3. Teach pupils how to use the internet wisely

They may not be able to get good online help at home, so a few courses in class can help. Teach
children small things they can do to help, like:
+ Keeping passwords and PG photos confidential.
+ Consider your response before responding in an angry or confrontational manner.
+ Using privacy options to restrict who sees and comments on your content.
+ Locking their phones in group settings and logging off public/classroom computers.

4. Keep an eye on online classroom activities and conduct

Cyberbullying can be avoided by being aware of how and where your kids spend time online in class.
You can respond quickly and appropriately to any bully.
