This document defines and describes mixtures and solutions. It explains that mixtures are made of two or more substances physically mixed together and can be either heterogeneous, with distinct particles that can be seen, or homogeneous, appearing uniform throughout with particles too small to see. Solutions are a type of homogeneous mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent, with water being the most common solvent. The document also defines solubility, soluble and insoluble substances, and concentrated versus dilute solutions.

2 KINDS OF MIXTURES: • HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES – DO NOT APPEAR THE “SAME” THROUGHOUT
– “LEAST MIXED”
– PARTICLES ARE LARGE
ENOUGH TO BE SEEN • HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES – Appear to be the same throughout
– “Well Mixed”
– Particles are very small--can’t
be seen SOLUTIONS • A type of homogeneous mixture formed when one substance dissolves in another
• “Best Mixed” of all mixtures
SOLUBILITY • SOLUTE: The substance that is dissolved in a solution
• SOLVENT: The substance that does
the dissolving in a solution – Water is the most common solvent – Water is the “UNIVERSAL SOLVENT”, since it can dissolve many substances • SOLUBILITY: The amount of a solute that can be dissolved in a given amount of solvent
• SOLUBLE: Term that describes a substance
that dissolves in another substance
• INSOLUBLE: Term that describes a
substance that does not dissolve (or very little dissolves) in another substance TYPES OF SOLUTIONS • DILUTE SOLUTION – A solution in which a little amount of solute is dissolved in a large amount of solvent. • CONCENTRATED SOLUTION – A solution in which a lot of solute is dissolved in a small amount of solvent.
