ROCKS/MINERALS AND ITS

CLASSIFICATIONS
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
● identify common rock-forming minerals using their physical
and chemical properties
● classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic
TARGET •Classify the
given sample
rocks and rock
forming –
minerals.
LEARNING TARGET:
I can appraise the habitability of a planet/moon based on
the unique characteristics of the earth;

WHAT ARE ROCKS AND MINERALS?
• Rock-forming mineral, any mineral that forms igneous, sedimentary, or
metamorphic rocks and that typically, or solely, forms as an intimate part of
rock-making processes.
TASK A
Describing the properties of
rock-forming minerals
HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE ROCK-FORMING
MINERALS ?
HARDNESS CRYSTAL FORM/ LUSTER
HABIT
COLOR and CLEAVAGE and
STREAK FRACTURE
SPECIFIC REACTION TO ACID
GRAVITY

CRYSTAL FORM/ HABIT
● internal structure (of atoms and ions) of the crystal (mineral)
● natural shape of the mineral before any cleavage or fracture
LUSTER
quality and intensity of reflected light exhibited by the mineral
HARDNESS
it is the quality of resistance of a mineral (not specifically surface) to
abrasion
COLOR and STREAK

CLEAVAGE FRACTURE
property to break along specific property to break but not along
planes of weakness to form cleavage planes
smooth flat surfaces

REACTION TO ODOR SPECIFIC
ACID GRAVITY
CLASSIFICATION OF MINERALS ACCORDING
COMPOSITION
TASK B

Describing the properties

of different types of
rocks
Igneous rock
•  (derived from the Latin word ignis meaning fire), or
magmatic rock
• formed through the cooling and solidification of magma
or lava

CLASSIFICATION OF IGNEOUS
According to FORMATION
ROCKS
According to COLOR/COMPOSITION According to TEXTURE/COOLING

1. EXTRUSIVE 1. MAFIC (dark-colored), low silica 1.GLASSY (very Rapid cooling)

content

2. INTRUSIVE 2.. INTERMEDIATE 2. FINE-GRAINED rapid coolling)

3. FELSIC (light-colored) high silica 3. COARSE-GRAINED (slow

content cooling)
CLASSIFYING IGNEOUS
ROCKS
• Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or
deposition of small particles and subsequent cementation of mineral or organic
particles on the floor of oceans or other bodies of water at the Earth's surface.
• Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process
called metamorphism, which means "change in form". ...
• Metamorphic rocks make up a large part of the Earth's crust and form 12% of the Earth's
land surface.

Option 1
• 1. You have to collect at least 5 rocks / mineral samples available
in your house, backyard, or in any place safe and near to you.
• 2. Take photos of all the materials you collected.
• 3. Name / identify the materials and paste its photo in a paper or
through ppt slide by making a chart/table.
• See the next slide for a suggested table / chart
