The dimensions of the T-section of a cast-iron beam are shown in Fig. P-714.
How far is the centroid of the area above the base?
A1=6(1)=6 in2
y1=0.5 in
A2=8(1)=8 in2
y2=5 in
A = A1+A2 = 6+8
A = 14 in2
A = Σay
14 = 6(0.5)+8(5)
= 3.07 in above the base answer 11
Determine the coordinates of the centroid of the area shown in Fig. P-715 with
respect to the given axes.
A1 = (6)(9)=27 in2 A = Σax
x1 = (6) = 2 in 41.14 = 27(2)+14.14(3)
y1 = (9) = 6 in = 2.34 in
A = A1+A2=27+14.14
A = 41.14 in2

Moment of Inertia
Moment of inertia, also called the second moment of area, is the product of area and the square
of its moment arm about a reference axis.

A hollow square cross section consists of an 8 in. by 8 in. square from which is
subtracted a concentrically placed square 4 in. by 4 in. Find the polar moment
of inertia with respect to a z axis passing through one of the outside corners.
Centroidal moment of inertia
