The Pentatonic Scale

Pentatonic scale - also called five-note scale or five-tone

scale, musical scale containing five different tones. It is
thought that the pentatonic scale represents an early stage
of musical development, because it is found, in different
forms, in most of the world's music.

“Penta” means “five”

“Tonic” means “Central note or 1st note”

Scale- is an instruction or a sequence of notes dividing an

octave.

Octave- is an interval whose higher note has a sound-wave

frequency of vibration twice that of its lower note.
Major Pentatonic Scale
Unlike the major scale, which is a seven note scale, the major
pentatonic scale consists of five notes. The five notes of the
major pentatonic scale are the root, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th
intervals of the major scale (the 4th and 7th scale degrees are left
out).

Since pentatonic scales contain 5 notes, we need to remove two

from the minor scale in order to get the minor pentatonic. The
two notes removed are the 2nd and 6th intervals. This means the
formula for the minor pentatonic scale is made up of the root,
3rd , 4th, 5th, and 7th from the minor scale. C Minor Pentatonic Scale
Difference between
Chromatic and
Pentatonic
The ChromaticScale
Scale
is a musical scale with twelve pitches, each a semitone, also
known as a half-step, above or below its adjacent pitches. On
the other hand pentatonic scale is a five-note scale and has no
semitone.

Difference between
Diatonic and Pentatonic
Scale
The Diatonic Scale
Diatonic scales have 7 notes. A pentatonic scale is a diatonic
scale that has two notes removed.
Do you know?
The relative minor scale uses the
same notes as the major scale but
starts on the sixth degree of the
major scale.

C Major Pentatonic and A
Minor Pentatonic are relative scales
- the same thing played in a different
context. In practical terms, that
means the two scales are
interchangeable, so with a bit of
music theory knowledge, you can
make a Major Pentatonic shape
sound like a Minor Pentatonic

and most overlooked scales in music.
- a series of semitones
- a scale made completely of half steps

In the context of music theory, there are two
rules that you must follow when writing a
chromatic scale which are:

• You must have at least one note on every pitch.

• You must not have more than two notes on any
pitch.
In all of the musical scales the chromatic
scales utilizes all the 12 tones, which add
more color to your music. Some of these 12
tones may not be very stable to the tonic in
the pentatonic scale but they serve the
purpose of variety and smooth
transitioning.
