Rodrigo Garcia nº 18
WHAT IS SLAVERY?

• Slavery is a practice that consists of one or more people being “owners” of the
other person or people.

• This practice was very common a few centuries ago, in countries’ colonies, but
it still exists but is very hidden and obviously illegal.
WHAT WERE THE REASONS THAT LED TO SLAVERY?

• The reasons that led to slavery then and now are basically the same:

Very low labor price;

Run away from taxes (more common today);

Facility of deceive the governments of some countries;

The desperation of some people to survive, which leads to enticement on the

part of those who enslave.
PORTUGAL AND SLAVERY

• In Portugal slavery started on 16th century and ended in the midle of 19th century
with the first laws that prohibited the import of people to slave. However this laws
was not extended to the other territories out of the kingdom.

• Between 16th and 19th centuries Portugal was one of the kingdoms with the highest
slave population. The slaves are in major originary from Africa and they usually
went to Brazil to work in sugar cane cultures.
MY OPINION ABOUT SLAVERY

• My opinion is the same that the others: the slavery is very horrible and never
should have existed. For me slavery shows how a human can be explored to the
limit and how human rights were irrelevant at the past.

• About the slavery in Portugal I think that without slavery on 16 th to 19th

centuries the country was not so developed at that time.

• I’ m very proud today because human rights are very defined in our society and
more of them are punished by the law in many countries.
