Sugarcane Mills -

• India is the world’s second-largest producer of sugar. Indian sugar and jaggery – an unrefined sugar popular across
Asia and Africa – is found in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nigeria, Tanzania and the United States among other countries
• UP is also known as the  “sugar bowl of India”
• Sugar mills and distilleries are one of India’s 17 highest polluting industries, discharging water into the Ganga River.
• In Uttar Pradesh, the biggest 56 sugar mills generate about 32% of the state’s wastewater and discharge up to  
85.7 million litres per day into the riverine system.
