CONTROL?
• Developed by Julian Rotter in 1950s.

• How strongly people believe they have

control over the situations and experiences
that affect their lives

• Divided into: Internal and External

Locus of Control can have a number of
impacts:

• Motivation
• Coping with stress

such as:
Control
• How a person approaches various tasks,
• or how successful a person is at particular
tasks.

Locus of control can be a great determinate of

peoples abilities in various areas of their lives.
Understanding it can also help people recognize
what aspects of themselves they need to change or
work on in order to be or perform better in their
everyday lives.
1. Job Performance: High internal locus of control is positively correlated with
organizational culture which is a measure of trust, integrity, professionalism, costumer
focus, and excellence. High internal locus of control is significantly positively
correlated with organizational culture.

2. Physical Performance: Internal factors have a significantly more of an impact on

happiness in athletes than external factors do. Understanding this affect can help
all stakeholders better influence an athlete's performance.
3. Health Sector - People are characterised by internal and external locus of
control. High locus of control has been associated with illness or unhealthier
state of mind and vice versa. Locus of Control affects all areas related to living a
healthy lifestyle.

4. Education Sector - LOC has been shown to have a strong correlation with
academic achievement. Students with more internal locus of control tend to have
higher grades than those students with higher external locus of control.
5. Stress - Stress has a negative effect on almost aspects of life so a
correlation between to stress and locus of control would support all
previous notions made about performance, health, and education,
as well as many others.

way in differentiating
between effective and
ineffective leaders, managers,
and employees
Is an internal locus of control desirable?

• It is healthy to perceive that one has control over those things which one is
capable of influencing.

• A more internal locus of control is generally seen as desirable.

• Having an Internal locus of control can also be referred to as "self-agency",

"personal control", "self-determination", etc.
• Internals can be psychologically unhealthy and unstable. An internal orientation
usually needs to be matched by competence, self-efficacy and opportunity so that the
person is able to successfully experience the sense of personal control and
responsibility. Overly internal people who lack competence, efficacy and opportunity
can become neurotic, anxious and depressed. In other words, internals need to have
a realistic sense of their circle of influence in order to experience 'success'.

• Externals can lead easy-going, relaxed, happy lives.
