Davraa Delegates in Davao Hospitalized Due to Food

Poisoning
Risk Management as Applied to Safety, Security, and
Sanitation
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Food poisoning downed at least 38 student delegates to the ongoing
Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) 2018, they were immediately brought to
Southern Philippines Medical Center.

Reports have it, the delegates from Mati, Davao Oriental were served fish and beef during their
lunch Saturday, February 17, 2018 but hours later the students complained having stomachache and
some were vomiting.

Among those who were rushed to the hospital is a coach staying at MES. The rest are athletes with
the oldest being 14 years old. One was admitted while 37 were placed under observation.
Food Hazard

Microbiological Hazards- According to Mr. Jenielito Atillo, spokesperson of the Department of Education
(Deped) delegates might have eaten spoiled leftovers. Some of the reporter also said that it was because of the
milk that was given to them and it was left under the sun for a long time.
The Possible Scenarios that may have Happened that Caused
the Outbreak of Foodborne Illness in DAVRAA

- Cost cutting on the budget


- Food leftover
- Drinking uncleared water
- Drinking milk that is left under the sun for too long
Foodborne illness (also called food poisoning or foodborne infection)
is common, but preventable. Here are some recommended techniques
to prevent an outbreak.

• Always keep hands clean.


• Always check use by dates or expiration dates.
• Limit the time that the food spends in the TDZ (Temperature Danger Zone).
• Sanitized utensils and equipment.
• Make sure the food is cooked thoroughly.
• Do not mix leftovers with freshly prepared food items.
• Keep the hot food hot, cold food cold, and frozen food frozen.
• Be better safe than sorry.
