Work Study

• Work Study is the term used in Great Britain while in USA it is called
Time and Motion Study.
• Definition:
According to British standard work study is defined as,
A management service based on those techniques, particularly
method study and work measurement, which are used in examination of
human work in all context and which lead to systematic investigation of all
the resources and factors which affect the efficiency and economy of the
situation begin reviewed inorder to effect improvement.
Objectives Benefits

1. Effective use of plant and 1. Work study improved the production

equipment flow and make it uniform so that
production can be completed in
2. Effective use of human effort minimum possible time

3. Evaluation of human work 2. Eliminate drudgery, frustration and

unhealthy working environment for
workers

3. Better relation between employee and

employer

4. Better product quality

METHOD STUDY

• Definition
According to British standard institute, “Method study may be understood as the
systematic recording and critical examination of existing and proposed way of doing
work, as a mean of developing and applying easier and more effective method and
reducing costs.”
• Its aim is to find the best possible manufacturing procedure that require least time
and less fatigue to worker.
• Used to analyse:
 Movement of body, people or material
 Activities of people and machines
Work Measurement

• Work measurement may be defined as the application of different techniques to

measure and establish the required time to complete a job by the qualified worker at an
adequate level of performance.

• In other words it is a technique to develop time standard for the performance of job.

• Since it is concerned with measurement of time it is also called Time study.

Objectives

• To establish the standard time for doing a job

• To distribute workload among the workers
• To calculate the number of employee needed for various task of the
organisation
• To help the management accurately determine the cost incurred in
production
• To compare the efficiency of various alternative methods and
determining the best alternative among them
• To establish standard for the performance of employee and
utilisation of machinery. This way substandard worker can be
identified.
Techniques of Work Measurement

1. Time study: This method of work measurement is generally used when

work is repetitive. It’s a sampling process in which a few observations of a
sample are taken. The inference drawn from the study of the sample are
used to determine the time required for the performance of the subsequent
cycles by the worker.
2. Work Sampling: This is another technique for measuring an activity. This
method is similar to time study. Here also a portion of the given work
activity or a sample thereof is put under observation. Inference are drawn
based on the findings in the sample and this is applied for the activity in
general.
3. Predetermined motion time system: PMTS is considered advanced as
compared to time study and work sampling. Its objective is to determine
the time required for doing different jobs. The time is determined based on
predetermined time values.
