• Words that name a person, a place, a
thing or an idea – an abstraction.
• The word “noun” comes from the Latin
“ nomen ” that means name.
• For example: Mohammed; Silicon Valley;
Keyboard; Gravity; Intelligence …
Two types of nouns
• Common Nouns:
They refer to persons, places and things.
For example: Mathematician; Laboratory;
Floppy …
• Proper Nouns:
They name any particular person, place,
or thing.
Proper nouns always begin with a capital
letter

• Concrete Nouns:
Name someone or something that you can
touch / hear / see / smell

• Abstract Nouns:
Name someone or something that you
cannot perceive with your five senses.

Compound Nouns
They are nouns that consist of more than a

- Hyphenated: Self-service / Left-handed
- Separated: Ice cream / High school
- Combined: Football / Output / Classmate
