Soft Storey

Soft Storey are less stiff or more Flexible , then the Storey
above.
Applying Earthquake load in frame

After applying the Masonry wall, The stiffness of the Structure Increases and the
upper block doesn’t goes much deflection (Significantly 0 deflection ), but ground
floor column goes much deflection

Now if the Base Column is not Designed sufficiently for this deflection, the
column will collapse, Which is Called soft storey Faliure
• Soft storey doesn’t need to be necessary in ground floor only,
it can occure in any Floor
Remedies
The designer should designed the Structure considering infill
wall Which may leads to the heavier column (Structural
member)
The moment (M), Vertical Force (F),
Axial force(A) value obtained From the
analysis software should be multiply by
factor 2.5 for designing, results in safer
section

Adding Extra columns as per
Designed (may be steel
columns

Bracing

Adding External
Bracing/ Shear Walls
For Existing Retrofitting Can Be done

Strengthening Existing columns
