Means of Escape from Flats or Maisonettes:

 Basic means of escape requirements are:


1. Every flat should have protected entrance hall of half
hour F.R.
2. Every living room should have an exit to the protected
entrance hall

3. Bedroom should be nearer to the entrance door


4. Doors opening to hallways should be fire resisting
5. Maximum travel distance from any bedroom exit to
entrance door is 7.5m

Means of Escape from Office Buildings:


Factors to be considered
 Width: Based upon the evacuation time of 2.5
minutes assuming 500mm width will allow the flow of
40 persons per minute
 Direct distance: A direct distance is the shortest
distance from any point within the floor area to the
nearest storey exit
 Maximum direct distance - 12m for escape in one
direction or 30m for escape in more than one direction.

 A travel distance is the actual distance traveled


 Maximum travel distance - 18m. for escape in
one direction and 45m. for more
 Escape routes should be clear with non slippery
even surfaces
 Ramps should have easy gradient of a slope of
not more than 1:12
 The min clear headroom should be 2m.

Staircase and Doors:

 Staircase: Should be of non combustible materials


leading to the place of safety
 External escape staircases:
Have adverse effect of weather and unpleasing
Should be constructed of steel, light alloy or concrete
and protected against corrosion
 Doors: Doors should be fire check, fire resisting or
smoke stop
