CLADDING FOR EXTERNAL FINISH

Classifications:

 Claddings fixed to structural backing

 Claddings fixed to framed structures

CLADDINGS FIXED TO STRUCTURAL BACKING

 Small unit claddings

 Used as a decorative feature

 The materials used are tiles, slates, timber

boarding, plastic boards and stone facings

 Fixing method is by timber framing or

mechanical fixings
CLADDINGS FIXED TO STRUCTURAL BACKING

Tile hanging:
 Ordinary plain roofing or decorative tiles
 The tiles are hung or fixed to battens
 Nailed by corrosion resistant nail of
adequate length
 In case of timber structural backing,
impervious layer to be placed underneath
the battens to prevent moisture

CLADDINGS FIXED TO STRUCTURAL BACKING

Timber claddings:

 Mould or shaped boards fixed to battens as

horizontal or vertical cladding

 Requires regular maintenance

 Need repainting at intervals of 3-5 years

CLADDINGS FIXED TO STRUCTURAL BACKING

Timber claddings:

 Preservative treatment are sometimes used

 Insect and fungi attack proof woods are

preferred

 Plastic boards are substitute for timber and

are fixed in similar manner
CLADDINGS TO FRAMED STRUCTURE
 This include panels of masonry constructed
between the columns and beams, light infill
panels and curtain walling

 Solid walls (brick wall) should be built for

12-15mm compression joint at each floor

 The combined effect of elastic strain,

drying shrinkage and creep in concrete
may result to reduction of up to 6mm for
each storey height of a building
CLADDINGS TO FRAMED STRUCTURE
 Deflection of beams and floors due to
elastic strain is upto 1/300 of span

 Shortening of columns under load is about

2.5mm for each storey height of 4m

 Drying shrinkage of 1.2mm for each 4m

 Creep of concrete is 2.5mm for each floor

PRECAST CONCRETE CLADDING PANELS
 Textured face in a storey height or column
spacing wide or undersill units

 Constructed of dense concrete mix

 Reinforced with mesh and cage of

reinforcement

 Concrete cover is 25mm

PRECAST CONCRETE CLADDING PANELS
PRECAST CONCRETE CLADDING PANELS
 The storey height panel span vertically
from beam to beam

 Under sill panels span horizontally from

column to column and used for high
wall/window ration

 Can be bottom supported or top hung
