LISTENING STRATEGIES
1. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE
 More knowledge about the topic being discussed,the
easier to understand
• Even not really know the whole issue being discussed,
still able to make intelligent guesses
• So,it makes a lot of sense to read widely,to listen to news
daily so as to strengthen your general background
knowledge
2. LOOK FOR MAIN IDEAS
 Always strive to understand the speakers main ideas
 No need to understand every singlen words/phrase being
uttered
This is the same situation in your daily conversation with
your friend
 If you observe closely even in those situation.You only
focus on the general ideas and respond accordingly
3. IDENTIFY PERTINENT POINTS
 We must be able to pick up smaller details from the idea
 We can point out these details from examples and the
repetition from the text

 For example:
-The main idea:University life
-Smaller detail:teaching,friends,accommodation and stuff
4. INFERENCING
 We understand or gather meaning not only from what has
been said
 When others not say exactly what they mean,we could
still deduce their meaning

time listening where you have missed certain information

 We must understand what we hear than to understand all
the words heard in a conversation

 Contextual can help us understand a conversation even


when there are new words being used

 You can still guess based on the situation discussed when


use this strategies
7. STRUCTURAL
 Simply hints or additional information the author provides
that can help you understand the meaning of a particular
word or phrase

 Grammar knowledge help us to understand what is being


mentioned
8. INTONATION
 Intonation is primarily a matter of variation in the pitch of
the voice

 The way the speaker uses his voices to show meaning or


feelings
-listen for details such as
-while listening,jot down shorts notes that can help you names,time,places,dates,location,number,etc
