Types of OS
Process and a program
What is an Operating system?
An operating system is a collection of software that
manages computer hardware resources and provides
common services for computer programs. The
operating system is a vital component of the system
software in a computer system. Application programs
usually require an operating system to function
Functions of OS
Providing a user interface
Running applications
Support for built in utility programs
Control to the computer program
Components of OS
Process Management
Memory Management
I/O device Management
Network Management
User Management
Types of OS
Single user, Single Task
Single user, Multi-Tasking
Multi user, Multi-Tasking
Single User Single Tasking
This type of the operating system only has to deal with
one person at a time, running one user applications at
a time.
An example of this kind of operating system would be
found on mobile phone. There can only be one user
using the mobile and that person is only using one of
its applications at a time.
Single User Multi-Tasking
Single user multi tasking OS allows you to perform
one or more than one task at a time.
Commonly OS are
MS Windows
Apple Macintosh
Single user Multi Tasking example
Microsoft Windows:
Windows is a series of operating systems developed by
Microsoft. Each version of Windows includes the
graphical user interface with a desktop which allows
users to view files and folders in Windows. For the
past two decades, Windows has been the most widely
used OS for personal computers PCs.
Macintosh
MacOS X:
OS X version 10 of the Apple Macintosh operating
system. OS X was described by apple as its first
“complete revision” of the OS since the previous
version is OS 9, with a focus on modularity so that
future changes would be easier to incorporate
Written in C++
Features of Operating System
Reliable
Operational at all times
Should coordinate and have good control of the input
and output devices on which they are performed.
Examples of computing devices which use
OS
Computers
Mobile phones
3d televisions
Video games
ATM
Advantages of OS
Easy to use
User friendly
Intermediate between all hardware’s and software’s of
the system
No need to know any technical languages
It is the platform of all programs
Disadvantages of OS
If any problem affected in OS, you may lose your all
the data stored
Unwanted user can use your own system
