ETHICS
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be
holy.
Act in me O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart O Holy Spirit, that I love what is holy.
Strengthen me O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.
Amen.
- St. Augustine
In this lesson, you will understand the difference between
Ethics and Morals. You will be learning the meaning of
philosophy and its branches where Ethics also belongs.

Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:

a. Identify the moral issues in life.
b. Make moral decisions in response to the issues being
confronted.
c. Appreciate the beauty of making moral decisions despite
of the dilemmas experienced.

“Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change
your life forever.” (Keri Russell) Human as we are, we are
called to decide in every issues we encounter in life. We
make decisions based on our reason or feeling.
Looking at the present situation we have right now, what do
you think is the biggest issue our country is facing right now in
relation to morality?
Human beings are always confronted everyday with issue,
decision making, moral judgment and dilemma. Issue is used to refer
to those particular situations that are often the source of considerable
and inconclusive debate. When one is placed in a situation and
confronted by the choice of what act to perform, the person is called
to make a moral decision. When a person is an observer who makes an
assessment on the action or behaviour of someone, she is making a
moral judgment. Going beyond the matter of choosing right over
wrong, or good over bad, and considering instead the more
complicated situation wherein one is torn between choosing one of
the two goods or choosing between the lesser of two evils: this is
moral dilemma.
Juan has a mother who is sick. He loves his
mother so much. One day, his mother was
attacked but her sickness. She needs to find
money in order to buy medicine. After all the
efforts done, Juan could not really find the
money. He had already asked help to all but no
one gives. The only and last resort of Juan is to
steal so he can save the life of his mother.

If you were Juan, would you allow your mother
to die or you will steal so she can live?
"The most important human endeavour is the striving for
morality in our actions. Our inner balance and even our
very existence depend on it. Only morality in our actions
can give beauty and dignity to life" (Albert Einstein). Our
moral actions and decisions are what matters most at the
end of the day. We are judged according to the good
things we have done to our brothers and sisters.
