1 Direct Proportion
Objective:
• 1.Understand the relationship of direct proportion.

• 2. Can use the knowledge of direct proportion to solve the

word problems
Review:
• Simplify:
• (1 ) 30cm: 0.5 m
• (2) 35min : 0.4h: 2400S

Investigation:
• In Singapore: if you borrow books from a public library and are late in
returning the books ,you will be fined 15 cents per day for each
overdue book, Table1: shows the fines for an overdue book;
Numbers of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
days (x)
Fine (y cents) 15 30 45 60 75 90 105 120 135

1. If the number of days a book is overdue increases ,will the fine increase or decrease?

2. If the number of days a book is overdue is doubled , how will the fine change?

3.If the number of days a book is overdue is tripled ( halved or reduced to 1/3) ,what will happen to the fine?
From the investigation ,what can we find?
• 1. the number of days ,x , a book is overdue increase ,the fine y cents
increase proportionally.
• Eg: if x is doubled(tripled) ,then y will be doubled(tripled).

• 2.the relationship is known as direct proportion, we say that the fine ,y

cents is directly proportional to the number of days ,x a book is
overdue.
Class Discussion:
• Work in pairs:
• 1.Give a few more real-life examples of quantities that are in direct
proportions.
• 2. Explain why they are directly proportional to each other.

Number of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
days (x)
Fine (y 15 30 45 60 75 90 105 120 135
cents)
Rate 15/1=15 30/2=15 45/3=15
(y/x)
If y is directly proportional to x.
then = or y=kx or ,(k is a constant)
