Steps involved in extracting a

soft-sediment section by
using Geoslicer
Introduction Of Geoslicer
• It may be short of dream among geologist to easily observed stratified layers
beneath our feet & Geoslicer can use for it.
Types of Geoslicer:
1. Wide Geoslicer
2. Long & narrow Geoslicer
3. Handy Geoslicer
Composed of sampling box has narrow flangs on each of two sides, shutter
plate and clips attached near the bottom of shutter plate. The clip works to
engage sample box and shutter plate at the flange during shutter descending.
The soil remains in box and a shutter plate by its friction.
The use of geoslicer for extracting subsurface sediment successions
involves steps:-

• Put down the plug part of the geoslicer vertically straight above
the surface and hammer down it into the ground. To avoid the
confusions, mark the direction of the North on any of two part of
the geoslicer (Figure 3.1-a, b & c).
• Put the socket part of the geoslicer on the plug part by exactly
inserting the sockets into the plugs and then again hammer down
then tie up the both parts of the geoslicer tightly with a bolt
(Figure 3.1-d & e).
• By putting an iron rod into the hook, we can pull up the geoslicer
holding sediment section tightly between the two parts of the
geoslicer (Figure 3.1-e & f).
• After extracting the geoslicer and putting horizontally on the
ground, separate both the parts leaving sediment section
undisturbed in the plug part of the geoslicer (Figure 3.2-a). Put a
perforated white cloth on the sediment section covering it
completely. Then spread an adhesive uniformly on the cloth for
fixing the sediment (Figure 3.2-b, c, d).
• Finally pick the remaining unfixed cloth at the top of the geoslicer
and peel up slowly moving towards the bottom of the geoslicer
(Figure 3.2-e & f).
Advantages of geoslicer:-

• While excavating trenches/pits in the soft sediment areas it

becomes very difficult to go deeper without JCB and
permission and some times due to water level also and thus
trenching is limited up to a certain depth.
• In such circumstances the geoslicer acts as an effective
instrument in extracting deeper sediment sections. Another
major advantage of geoslicer is in the collection of the
samples, where we are not only able to get a complete
sediment succession, but also we can collect the samples
separately from all the visible sediment layers along with the
exact depth of their occurrence.
• Before collecting the sediment samples from the geoslicer, we
carefully drew the sections in our diary and described the
layers composition along with marking the position of
• the carbon samples in the logs collected for radiocarbon
dating. Also the thickness of the different sediment units and
the depths of their occurrence were noted down.
