Calipers

• These are used for measuring inside and


outside dimensions. The dimensions are
read with the help of steel rule, micrometer
or vernier caliper.
• Types:
• Outside caliper: It is used to measure
outer dimensions of a job. It consist of 2
legs which are bent inside to form a curve.
The legs can adjusted with the help of a
screw provided.

• Inside caliper: It is used to measure
inside dimensions. It has got 2 legs which
are bent slightly outwards at the end. The
legs can be adjusted with the help of a
screw.

• Hermaphrodite caliper: In this caliper
one leg is straight and the other one
slightly bent inside at the end. It is used
to scribe a line from an edge.

• Trammel: It is also called beam compass.
It is used for scribing large circles and
arcs. It consist of a steel bar or a beam
(available from 6 inch to 12 inch) with 2
legs. The legs can be locked by a knurled
nut provided on the top of the legs.

• Dividers: These are used to scribe arcs
and circles and also to transfer dimension
on the work. It has got 2 legs with a sharp
point at the end
