1(b) (i)Observation
 MV (From table)
 RV (from table)
 with value ( must have unit)

Observation 1: When the fan speed is one, the air

bubble takes 37 minutes to move from P to Q or 10
cm.

Observation 2: When the fan speed is five, the air

bubble takes 12 minutes to move from P to Q or 10
cm.
1b(ii) Inference
 Adjective RV
 BECAUSE MV theory (high / more less)
 SO IRV (high / more less)

Inference 1: When the fan speed is one or low,

the water loss from the balsam plant is slow.

Inference 2: When the fan speed is five or high,

the water loss from the balsam plant is fast.
1(c) State variables

Variable Method to handle the variable

Manipulated variable

By using different fan speeds for all the
Fan speed or air movement
experiment.

Responding variable

By taking down / recording the time taken

cm / from P to Q by using a stop watch
P to Q
Controlled variable

By using the same fan / the same balsam
The fan / the balsam plant / the
plant / maintaining the same temperature
temperature.
which is …through all the experiments.

1(d) Hypothesis
 MV + RV = Relationship

The higher the air movement / fan

speed, the higher the amount of water
loss from the balsam plant.

of curve
1(f) Generate the relationship
from data
- Hypothesis
- Reason
- Effect

When the fan speed is higher, the time

taken for the air bubble to move from P
to Q is shorter, because water loss to
environment is high so the rate of
transpiration is higher
1(g) Definition operational
-Theory
-Shown by RV + CV
- Affected by MV

The rate of transpiration is the amount of

water loss from a plant per unit time shown
by time taken for air buble to move and
affected by the speed of fan.
1(h) Prediction
P1 = correct prediction with value
E1 = Reason (explanation for MV)
E2 = Effect (explanation for IRV)

The fan speed is higher than 5, the air movement is faster so the rate of
transpiration will be higher than 0.83 cm/minute.

OBSERVATION

a.The time taken for the air bubble to move a
distance of 10 cm is the 6 minutes in set P/ 70oC

b. The time taken for the air bubble to move a

distance of 10 cm is 58 minutes in set R/ 20oC
INFERENS

a. Set P is the hottest so the plant lose

water the fastest.

b. Set R is the coldest so the plant lose

water the slowest.

Manipulated

Temperature Changing the conditions / place of the plant, under
direct sunlight, under shady tree, in dark place.

HYPOTHESIS
The higher the temperature of the plant,
the shorter the time taken for the air
bubble to move a distance of 10 cm.

GRAPH
X-axis and Y-axis are corrects, labels of
axis with unit are correct
Correct plotting of point
Smooth and correct curve
RELATIONSHIP
When the temperature increases, the air
bubble moves from X to Y at a distance of
10 cm faster, so the rate of transpiration is
higher
PREDICTION

The time taken will be more shorter/

less then 6 minutes. The heater makes
the box hotter so more water will loss
in transpiration.
DEFINE OPERATIONALLY

Transpiration is the movement of the water

molecule along the capillary tube due to
evaporation of water vapour from the
surface of the leaves and is influence by
the surrounding temperature
