ABSTRACT

The rise of social media has become an epidemic that does not seem to be stopping any time soon. On-
line social networking sites have become increasingly popular and almost an integral part of everyday life,
particularly for college students. It is estimated that the average amount of time spent on social networking
sites range from thirty minutes to over two hours on a daily basis. The purpose of this presentation is to
explore the relationship between social media and low self-esteem.
THESIS STATEMENT

The social-comparaison theory is the idea that individuals are constantly self-evaluating and comparing
themselves to others. This theory suggests that our self-esteem is affected by social comparison , and alters
how we determine our self-worth.

It is believed that as the use of social media becomes more frequent, the self-esteem of the individual
decreases.
SOCIAL MEDIA

• Social networking is the use of particular websites and applications to interact with other users.
• These websites and applications that enable the user to participate in social networking is what we refer to
as social media.
• Social media sites have become an outlet for individuals to share information, pictures, and videos of
themselves for other’s to view with a click of button.
• Affiliations , schedules, announcements, and more personal content have become a normality to disclose on
the internet and share with the world.
SELF DISCLOSURE

• Studies have indicated that there are much higher levels of self-disclosure and personal information on the
internet than ever before.

• Further research has shown that people are willing to disclose more personal and sensitive information on
social networking sites than in person.
SELF-ESTEEM

• Self-esteem is the appraisal of the value or worth of the self.

• Self-esteem can be perceived both positively and negatively, and has shown to be interpreted differently in

different stages of life.

• The need t be accepted plays a large role in self-esteem, and social media may act as tool in a person’s

search for social acceptance.

• Individuals with generally low self-esteem tend to self-disclose as a way to gain acceptance.
THE WAYS IN WHICH SOCIAL MEDIA CAN
INFLUENCE PEOPLE’S SELF ESTEEM

First, it's important to recognize that social media has become an integral part of many people's lives. It's a
platform where people can connect with others, share their thoughts and experiences, and engage with a global
community.

social media can provide a source of inspiration and motivation. For example, people can follow others who are
pursuing their passions or achieving their goals, which can provide inspiration and encouragement. Seeing
others succeed can also give people a sense of hope and possibility, which can improve their self-esteem.

On the negative side, however, social media can also have a damaging effect on self-esteem. One of the main
reasons for this is that people often compare themselves to others on social media, which can lead to feelings of
inadequacy or insecurity. For example, seeing others' perfect-looking vacations, outfits, or relationships can
make people feel like they don't measure up.
THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON A GROUP AGE

The effects of social media on different age groups can vary. In general, younger people may be
more vulnerable to the negative effects of social media on self-esteem, as they may be more
susceptible to comparison and cyberbullying.

Furthermore, younger people may also be more likely to engage in risky behaviors on social
media, such as sharing personal information or posting provocative photos. This can expose them
to a variety of dangers, such as identity theft or harassment, which can have a negative impact on
their self-esteem.

On the other hand, older people may be less affected by the negative effects of social media on
self-esteem. This is because they may be more resistant to comparison and cyberbullying, and may
be more savvy about protecting their privacy and personal information online.
THE ROLE OF INDIVIDUAL FACTORS IN DETERMINING HOW SOCIAL
MEDIA AFFECTS PEOPLE

One study found that people with high self-esteem were less likely to engage in social comparison
on social media, and were less affected by the negative effects of comparison. This is because
people with high self-esteem generally have a more positive view of themselves and their abilities,
and are less likely to be affected by others' opinions or actions.

Additionally, personality traits can also play a role in determining how social media affects
people.
For example, people who are more extroverted may be more likely to use social media to connect
with others and boost their self-esteem. In contrast, people who are more introverted may be less
likely to use social media, and may be more affected by the negative aspects of it.
THE POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS THAT CAN HELP MITIGATE THE
NEGATIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON SELF-ESTEEM

 Setting boundaries around social media use. This can include things like limiting the amount of time spent
on social media, avoiding social media use before bedtime, and not checking social media first thing in the
morning. Setting boundaries can help people use social media in a healthy and balanced way, and can
reduce the negative effects of social media on self-esteem.

 Seeking support from friends and family. It's important for people to have a strong support system to help
them cope with the challenges of social media. Friends and family can provide emotional support, advice,
and guidance, which can help people navigate the complexities of social media and maintain their self-
esteem.

 Seeking professional help. In some cases, the negative effects of social media on self-esteem may be more
severe, and may require the help of a professional. A therapist or counselor can provide specialized support
In conclusion, while social media has many positive aspects, it can also have a negative impact on
self-esteem. It's important for people to use social media in a healthy and balanced way, and to
remember that the images and messages they see on these platforms are often not an accurate
reflection of reality.
