Objectives:

 Identify the difference between direct and reported speech;


 Use direct and reported speech appropriately;
 Understand and follow the rules in changing direct to indirect speech and
vice-versa.
Direct and Reported Speech
A. Joan said, “I will finish my assignments.”

B. Joan said that she would finish her


assignments.
Direct Speech

A. Joan said, “I will finish my assignments.”


Characteristics:
1. Reporting clause – Joan said
2. Reporting verb – said
3. Reported Clause – I will finish my assignments
4. Reported Verb – will finish
Reported Speech

B. Joan said that she would finish her assignments.

It is a report on what someone else said or


wrote without using that person's exact words.
Unlike direct speech, it doesn’t have quotation
marks.
A. Joan said, “I will finish my assignments.”

B. Joan said that she would finish her


assignments.
Transforming Direct

Examples:

Direct: Odette said, “We have to go on mid lane.”


Reported: Odette said they had to go on mid lane”

Direct: Odette said, “We will go on mid lane.”


Reported: Odette said they would go on mid lane”
Examples:

Direct: Bruno announced, “The meeting already started”

Reported: Bruno announced that the meeting already had


started.

Transform the following sentences to reported speech.

Answer: The teacher asked her if she would join the


contest.
Transform the following sentences to reported speech.

They said, “We are veterans.”

Answer: They said that they were veterans.
