What is the Theory of Multiple
intelligences…
This theory was developed in 1983 by Howard
Gardner, Professor of Education at Harvard
University. It suggests that the traditional notion of
intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited
Dr. Gardner proposes nine different intelligences
which can relate to a person’s unique aptitude set
of capabilities and ways they might prefer to
demonstrate intellectual abilities.
Few words for Howard Gardner…
 He born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1943.
 He refused to go to Phillips Academy in Andover
Massachusetts and he entered Kingston in
Pennsylvania.
 Then he went to Harvard University to study
History in readiness for a career in the law.
 He entered Harvard’s doctoral programme in
1966 and completed his PhD in 1971.
 He was a lecturer (1971-1986) and professor in
education (1986-)
 Frame of Mind(1983) was Howard Grander, first
full-length statement of his theory of multiple
intelligences.
Importance of the theory today…

School focus more of its attention on linguistic and

mathematical intelligence. Also, the way of education is
based on two categories of students: visual learners and
auditory learners. Some children who have a unique type of
learning, they being label “Learning disabled”, “ADD” or
simply underachievers. The theory of multiple intelligences
can make a difference and change this situation. These kids
will be motivated and develop their talents without being
afraid.Futhermore, teenagers can make the appropriate
decision of their future. The theory gives a whole new way
to look at their lives and develop their potentials through
courses, hobbies or programs of self-development.
The Multiple Intelligences…

 Verbal-Linguistic intelligence word smart

 Logical-mathematical intelligence number smart
 Spatial intelligence picture smart
 Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence body smart
 Musical intelligence music smart
 Interpersonal intelligence people smart
 Intrapersonal intelligence self smart
 Naturalist intelligence nature smart
 Existential intelligence cosmic smart
The intelligences and their abilities….

A person can
have more
than one
intelligence
Existential intelligence
is not so popular
but many people
have it without
knowing …
Multiple intelligences and career…

 Verbal-Linguistic comedian, journalist, lawyer,

politician, talk-show host
 Logical-Mathematical auditor, detective,
pharmacist, scientist, bookkeeper
 Spatial artist, pilot, photographer, navigator,
film animator
 Bodily-Kinesthetic actor, athlete, yoga
instructor, dancer, firefighter
 Musical songwriter, voice actor, singer,
musician, choir director
Multiple intelligences and career…

 Naturalist farmer, geologist, meteorologist,

astronomer, environmental lawyer
 Interpersonal nurse, psychologist, social
worker, waiter, travel counselor
 Intrapersonal career counselor, philosopher,
owner, writer, theologian
 Existential public speaker, psychic, yoga
instructor, pastor, chaplain
My multiple intelligences…
My multiple intelligences:
 Logical-Mathematical I will be
 Naturalist successful in my
 Intrapersonal job!
My future job: Chemical engineer
I believe my intelligences will help me with my future
job:
 Logical-Mathematical Categorize and organize
my ideas
 Naturalist Exploring new things and learning
about plants(because a chemical engineer deals
design and operation of plants)
 Intrapersonal Self-control and working alone
